S Health [7] is a comprehensive health and wellness platform that helps consumers and their loved ones stay healthy by acting as a lifestyle tracker, health content provider, care connector, and personal coach - all within a secure, integrated, and insightful mobile user experience. Built-in smartphone sensors and devices are tightly integrated with the application for intuitive data collection and management. S Health integrates with a broad range of health and wellness apps and accessories including fitness and medical devices (glucometers, blood pressure monitors, and heart rate monitors). Secure data management and privacy-aware data sharing allows consumers to manage their health data and get support from friends, family, and health professionals. Our platform empowers consumers to self-manage their health helping them stay fit, be more active, lose weight, eat healthier, or manage a health condition. For starters, insightful charts, reports, and health content help consumers to achieve their daily health and wellness goals. Our engagement strategies make use of behavior change methods such as goal setting, timely reminders, progress updates, encouragements, relapse preventions, self-comparisons, and group-comparisons to name a few. Trackers enable consumers to easily measure and manage a multitude of lifestyle and health related metrics such as activity, food, sleep, weight, stress, heart rate, blood glucose, and blood pressure. More advanced health and wellness programs provide the next level of engagement helping consumers to manage their conditions and fitness enthusiasts to prepare for the next marathon. Behind the scenes, S Health relies on a robust, secure, and cost-effective client/server technology platform. Our platform serves millions of users with meaningful data-driven insights that make use of small data and big data analysis as well as leverage the synergistic interplay between the two (see Figure 2). For example, the location trail and exercise characteristics of one’s weekly runs could be integrated with analysis of nearby runs from other people with similar exercise characteristics to recommend exercise buddies or establish running competitions. Or one’s weekly activity performance could be compared with group averages from the same age and sex group to enable self- and group comparisons. From a health perspective, analyzing one’s care adherence profile and comparing it with adherence profiles that led to positive health outcomes, could give valuable insight on the next best adherence regimen to take or identify important regimen gaps. The abilities to integrate social aspects and perform self- and group comparisons are crucial elements from a behavior change perspective. Samsung Digital Health SDK [8] provides the foundation to build and monetize the next generation health and wellness services. The SDK is built upon Samsung’s own best-in-class security framework, the broad integration support of a wide range of sensors and devices, and a flexible data model to support a variety of use cases. Our SDK allows technology innovators to (1) combine predefined data types with custom data type extensions in order to build flexible data models and ease data integration and preparation for analytic processes, (2) sync and normalize data between devices via a transparent data layer, (3) import/export data, and (4) transform data into a format suitable for small data and big data analysis through a flexible data manipulation framework supporting CRUD operations and data aggregation queries. All this functionality is backed by defense-grade data security and privacy controls, which allow users to control permissioning of the data via user consent. Convenient APIs are provided that make it easy to integrate our Digital Health SDK into your development environment enabling quicker time to market for both applications and service delivery.

S Health and Samsung Digital Health SDK provide the ideal platform to address above-mentioned key adoption barriers by aiming for (1) the highest data security and privacy standards, (2) a comprehensive collection and integrated management of data, and (3) meaningful data analysis and presentation by leveraging small data, big data, and the interplay between the two. Our platform connects consumers with providers and implements the foundation to create engaging and effective mobile health experiences ranging from wellness to clinical-driven services. In the future, we will further enhance and extend the consumer-provider relationship and equip technology innovators with the right tools to take part in the mobile health opportunity.
