blogmeet maria ly, co-founder & ceo of wellness app skimble (maker of workout trainer for samsung). to celebrate international women’s day, we interviewed this top female developer and entrepreneur. she shared her journey to become a leader in a male-dominated industry and her passion for supporting women in tech. read on for some great tips on how you can help women make big moves in the tech industry. how did you get your start in the tech industry? growing up in canada, i was part of kidsareit, a tech-focused program founded by vicki saunders (who now heads up sheeo). i stayed in touch with this group to help foster the youth entrepreneurial culture in canada and even had a mobile-modification business with a few high school friends. i chose to take all the tech and programming classes available at my high school, which continued to spark my joy in tech. eventually, i went on to study computer engineering at the university of waterloo. during my studies, i had 6 different co-op internships around the world, which exposed me to different tech verticals (cad software, aerospace, automotive, hvac, semiconductors, etc.) and some wonderful bosses/mentors. all these early life experiences helped solidify the idea that i could have fun doing meaningful work within the tech industry, and i'm forever grateful. what inspired you to start skimble and what makes workout trainer different from other fitness apps? as a youngster, i dabbled in figure skating and gymnastics, got the chance to represent canada at the world cheerleading championships, and more. then i fell in love with rock climbing. i was all about living an active life and dreamed of the day i could combine tech and fitness in a creative way. with the advent of the smartphone, skimble came to life. our flagship app, workout trainer, was among the first multimedia-focused workout apps on the market, offering the largest open exercise databases for community members and trainers. that means you can quickly find a workout that meets your needs or simply create a specific workout of your choosing, complete with your own media. we also showcase a ton of real-life and celebrity trainers on a regular basis so you can follow these folks to help keep you motivated. what major hurdles did you face when developing skimble? we've been bootstrapped and self-funded since day one. when we got into the rock health accelerator program, we received a grant to build out our app. in those early days, my co-founder and i did most of the heavy lifting. i went through a ui/ux bootcamp course to help us design our initial user experience and ran about 30 of our first photoshoots. this was a great experience because we got immediate feedback from our community and were able to collaborate first-hand with so many amazing personal trainers. how has samsung supported skimble and the developing process? samsung provides developers with a range of developer tools as well as stellar developer-focused learning/networking events like the samsung developer conference. as part of the made for samsung app suite, we've had the opportunity to work closely with in-house developers on select partner projects, too. we were also stoked to receive the 2021 best wellness app award. what are some unique challenges you’ve faced as a woman in the tech industry and how did you overcome them? many moons ago, there were only a handful of women computer engineering/science grads coming out of most universities. there were plenty of skeptics in a predominantly male-centric world and i have my (un)fair share of stories. you may be aware of an unconscious bias where men are judged by their potential and women are judged by their past performance. women are additionally judged on their friendliness and morality. despite all this, there was still this resounding sense of can-do in the air and it did not stop our early crew of tech ladies from being the change we wanted to see. as i started skimble, i felt in many ways less pressure to fit a certain mold. we were creating our own company culture, which was pretty liberating! how has the tech industry changed to encourage more females to pursue a career in tech? one thing is that there's more transparency in recruiting/hiring including how much pay an average person in a certain role should receive. this kind of info wasn't available in the past. now, it's openly available and informs us of the gender pay gap, especially at the higher levels. that kind of information can be used by women to negotiate. anita borg suggests some companies that are pro-women in the workforce. why is it important to encourage other women in tech? in the tech industry, less than 30% of the jobs are held by women. broadly speaking, most technology is for everyone. it makes perfect sense that women should be right there at the forefront. visibility also matters. girls and boys need to see tech leaders of all genders, ethnicities, shapes, and sizes. this way, we can create the most inclusive solutions for the near and far future. what advice do you have for young women who are interested in a career in tech? go for it! more than ever before, women are breaking barriers, having their voices heard, gaining the support of their male counterparts, and narrowing the pay/position gaps. i would further encourage parents of young children to expose them equally to different career options. have them participate in a stem program over the summer. teach them how to type and code. you know the hashtag #tymed (teaching young minds every day)? we need to start educating them early so when they look around and ask themselves, “where is the inspiration?”, it will hopefully be all around us. what are your favorite resources or organizations that support women in tech? nowadays, i have been investing alongside some incredible women. one in five angel investors are women! on the early/angel stage side, i've had the opportunity to invest with tess hau of tess ventures. on the later stage/pre-ipo side, i've invested with kristin mcdonnell of menlo group. i'm lucky to able to advise women-led companies and collab on side projects with women. this is to say that if you can, let's pay it forward in women-centric investing and mentorship. let's help each other chase down our biggest dreams. moreover, i have always had respect for my alma mater, the university of waterloo. and i can’t forget to give a shout out to all the greater toronto area entrepreneurial tech communities. many of these groups didn’t exist in the early 2000s. thanks to maria ly for sharing her experiences in tech and helpful advice on supporting the next generation of women in tech. be sure to follow us on @samsung_dev to keep up-to-date on the latest developer news. keep an eye on our blog for some helpful resources on how you can support women in tech, and make sure to sign up for the samsung developer program to take advantage of exclusive benefits and access helpful developer resources.

blogas host and producer of the samsung developers podcast, i always look for ways to improve our podcast presence. so in august, at the podcast movement conference in dallas, texas, i explored new production tips for recording, editing, and developing fun content ideas for you all to enjoy. the true perk of attending an in-person podcast conference is meeting the large community of passionate people. those who attend a podcast conference are unlike any other attendees i have met in the past; these people love to talk, share, and, most importantly, listen. but, hey, isn't that what podcasts are all about? highlights from podcast movement 2022 at podcast movement, i attended countless sessions and keynotes, learned about the latest products and services on the expo floor, and networked throughout the week. here are the top highlights from my time in dallas. podcasting 2.0 — a new era, free of big tech the founders of podcastindex.org, adam "the podfather" curry and dave jones, hosted this session on podcasting 2.0. in 2020, adam began working with dave to develop podcastindex.org, the nucleus behind the podcast 2.0 movement involving podcast app developers, hosting companies, and content producers. podcast 2.0 utilizes the podcast index features that enable content producers to be free from commercial tech companies and global banking systems. adam curry discussing trends in the podcasting ecosystem. one of the key takeaways from this session was learning about "value for value," a term that adam coined during the early days of podcasting. originally it meant, "if you find value in what we make, consider a donation." however, the term has evolved to represent an approach to funding that utilizes cryptocurrency. fans can send micro fractions of bitcoins to their favorite podcasters using podcast players like podverse. check out adam and dave's show, podcasting 2.0, to hear the latest on the podcast industry and adam's many other podcast shows. no agenda moe factz with adam curry curry and the keeper fun fact: back in the 80s, adam was an on-air personality for mtv. after working with mtv, he helped develop technology that would allow broadcasting on the internet, the foundation for what would become podcasting. steve jobs reached out to adam to bring this technology to apple and the ipod. and that's when the podcast was born. twenty thousand hertz: how the sausage is made twenty thousand hertz is one of my absolute favorite podcasts and has been for many years, telling the stories behind the world's most recognizable and interesting sounds. host and creator dallas taylor and supervising producer casey emmerling covered the tools and procedures they use to create each episode. topics included gathering ideas, research, guest interviews, audio editing, sound design, and promotion. twenty thousand hertz on how the sausage is made. the key takeaway from this session was learning how dallas closes an interview with one of three strategic questions: anything else that we have not discussed? dallas said guests typically say, "um, no, i think we got it all, but…" and then proceed to give some great sound bites. why does this (interview topic) even matter? dallas usually says the question at a slow pace to help invoke an emotional response. of all the things you have done in your life, why did you pursue this? dallas said of all closing questions, this is the one that can bring out raw, passionate emotions, perfect for closing an interview. as a massive fan of their award-winning show, hearing from one of my idols in the podcast space and learning his secrets is extremely valuable to me as a podcast creator. and to clarify, this dallas taylor is not the metal singer or the drummer for crosby, stills & nash. twenty thousand hertz did a great podcast on the many people that share his name, being dallas taylor. fostering your community and grow your show several ex-professional wrestlers presented one of the most significant sessions. jeff jarrett and eric bischoff talked about their time as professional wrestlers and how they have grown their niche shows. jeff jarrett and eric bischoff bring their life stories to a new audience. one of the key elements for a successful podcast is to ensure you are solving a problem. for jeff and eric, the problem is that old fans want to stay connected and reminisce about the good old days of professional wrestling. one of the successful strategies they implemented was to treat listeners as "family" and not simply subscribers. they do this by randomly calling their members just to chat on the phone. not only is the listener thrilled to hear from them, but then they tell friends and share on social media, which ultimately grows your show. jeff and eric also spoke about how you don't have to have a large audience, just a passionate audience that cares about the content you share. for example, they often will record a simulcast watching old wrestling matches and include commentary about what was going on away from the camera. fans love to re-live those nostalgic moments and hear all about the craziness. check out my world with jeff jarret and 83 weeks with eric bischoff. the sound of story when samsung asked me to create a podcast, i drew my inspiration from one of the most intriguing podcasts i have ever listened to, npr's how i built this with guy raz. each episode is an interview with one of the world's best-known entrepreneurs to learn how they built their iconic brands. ramtin arablouei and rund abdelfatah are the sound designers for how i built this and many other top-rated podcasts on npr. ramtin arablouei and rund abdelfatah on building quality sound to your podcasts. the session i attended was called the sound of story, which focused on their latest podcast project throughline. each episode tells a story from an historical moment that shaped our world. as both hosts and sound designers, ramtin and rund explained the importance of how sound design influences the feeling and message people receive. one of the key learnings was their approach to timing within the soundscape. the audience should hear the sound before hearing the words describing the sound, introducing an element of unpredictability that can help maintain the listener's attention. another approach that both ramtin and rund use is to not be literal with sound effects. if the narration says, "the sword fell from his hands," you won't hear the clanging of a sword but something within the music that sonically represents the sound of a sword, allowing the sound effect to blend into the music texture. check out many other podcast shows that ramtin and rund have worked on, all with beautiful sound design. ted radio hour hidden brain embedded invisibilia tony morelan brings his enthusiasm and energy to the samsung developers podcast. more on samsung developers and podcasting listen to the samsung developers podcast for the latest on our developer community if you are involved in podcasting or looking to get started, visit podcastmovement.com for content on past and future conferences and access to many conference session videos. and be sure to check out my recap from last year's podcast movement conference, held in nashville, tn. you can also visit podfestexpo.com, another great podcasting conference i have attended in the past, known for its vibrant community of podcasters. bring your podcast to samsung devices are you a podcaster and want to grow your listening audience? blogto get you started on your path to vr content creation, we’ve partnered with udacity to offer samsung developer program members 25% off term 1 or term 2 of their vr nanodegree program. it’s a great opportunity to learn best practices from the experts. as an added bonus, you’ll receive a free samsung 360 camera after you complete your nanodegree program. welcome to the first q&a in our vru (vr to the power of you) series, where we’re asking some of the world’s best vr content creators how they’re developing groundbreaking work that’s pushing the limits of vr. in this first entry, we chatted with joel mcconvey, director of digital at sesqui, a canada 150 signature project that aims to engage millions of canadians through its immersive cinematic and virtual reality content, online activities and learning programs. sesqui is using a traveling mobile dome and partnerships with museums, planetariums and science centers to screen its marquee film horizon, which features more than 90 breathtaking scenes from across canada– all in 360°. many people associate vr with gaming. why do you think 360 film has the potential to push vr into the mainstream? i think what we will ultimately see is the amalgamation of these two forms. you may always have games that hew to game convention, and films that explore the passive experience, but if we think about what is always held up as vr’s holy grail – “presence” – that points to a virtual environment that has the verisimilitude of film, combined with the interactivity of gaming. in this very early stage of the medium, we are still exploring, defining parameters and working with the constraints of the hardware. but with continued development, i hope to see vr become less reliant on previously established media forms and categories, and to develop its own grammar – so that something won’t necessarily be a vr game or a vr film, but will just be vr, and that we’ll all understand what that means. even with high-end vr headsets, users can experience poor video quality. how do you trouble shoot this? we employed dozens of tricks. we improved video playback performance via unsynchronized pixelbuffer updates. we tested half a dozen tricks to increase frame-rates. we turned on linear filtering for videos for a smoother look. to be honest, though, the highest video quality we were able to achieve was for our marquee 360 film, horizon. it’s pristine – but to get it there, it meant shooting on a custom-built red dragon rig housing three red cameras, for a 9k image that required 3000 hours of painstaking stitching and compositing. if you can manage that, i guarantee your videos will look great. vr is growing, but monetization of the product remains a challenge. what's your advice to vr filmmakers for attracting funding? my answer is counterintuitive: make stuff. if you experiment with “demo” quality vr setups and amass a library of content that illustrates what you hope to do and what you’re capable of, you will instantly be more fundable than someone who has a great vr idea but no idea how to actually execute it. like a first-time novelist, there needs to be a willingness to experiment and work without a safety net to reach a point of fundability in an environment in which funding streams are still very rare. how has vr filmmaking changed the production process both on set and in the studio? i think it requires a totally new approach, in everything from developing an idea to storyboarding a shoot to actually filming in 360. there are lots of funny stories from our shoots about the ways in which the crew had to hide themselves within the scene, so as not to appear in the picture. there’s no “behind the camera” in vr, so that’s a big consideration. you’d better have a big tree or fence to crouch behind. in the studio, for our purposes, we were often fundamentally working with code. that meant a sometimes frustrating dissonance in the vocabularies of the various team members. our 3d artists would create something based on specs, which would then change based on iterations. one thing i learned is that vr is a lot more like an ongoing process than the clean linear production of a film. sure, you’re finished at some point. but allowing time for testing and iteration is crucial, since you never know what kinds of bugs will pop up, especially in developing for multiple platforms. so technically, i think the really great vr filmmakers of the near future will likely need to know – or at least be comfortable speaking about – code. but on an even larger scale, i think it’s about thinking differently – letting go of the grammar of traditional film to allow vr to be itself. for instance, storyboarding in 3d or plotting in concentric circles. you need a different toolkit, but also a different mindset. where do you think the challenge lies in the next 5 years of hardware development, both from display and capture points of view? all hardware challenges will revolve around aligning people's high expectation of vr with the reality of the limitations of hardware. if vr is to succeed, it will need to be what people think it already is and that means increasing pixel density, refresh rates, frame rates and allowable poly counts. the expectation of where vr is/should be is a wonderful thing and there is a need from both content creators and hardware manufacturers to meet that expectation to avoid disappointment. specifically, for capture, i think there’s an urgent need for a standard in turnkey 360 cameras or rigs. the contenders still vary wildly in quality, price and availability. stitching feels like a step we’ll eventually just be able to automate. but someone has to combine design, functionality and cost in a way that makes it effortless for people to set up a 360 camera. for display, the consensus seems to be inside-out tracking. as long as you have external sensors, you’re asking people to modify their physical spaces, which is sort of a cheat for vr, when you think about it. wireless inside out tracking will lighten vr’s hardware load considerably, and again, ease of use is key. what should amateur filmmakers know before shooting vr for the first time? practically, number your cameras carefully. establish a clear and efficient pipeline. watch out for shadows or other things that will make stitching a pain in the rear. more broadly, you will almost certainly have to collaborate, and you’ll (almost) always be better off listening to those who have more experience than you. try not to use proprietary software, unless there are already a lot of people using it. most importantly, this is just the beginning. you may not be able to achieve exactly what you set out to do, but we have not even seen the tip of the iceberg in terms of vr’s full potential. you are at the crest of the frontier. keep your eyes on the horizon, but don’t forget to look around. thanks to joel for taking the time to speak with us. to make sure you don’t miss any vru content, be sure to follow us on twitter (#beasamsungdev) and like us on facebook. also, if you’re a vr creator and you want your content to be seen, explore samsung vr. it can help you with gain the reach you need – available on gear vr, mobile and web platforms, as well as in over 50 countries abroad, it can take your content to a global audience. finally, if you have an interest in vr, be sure to join us at the 2017 samsung developer conference (happening on october 18-19 in san francisco) where you can attend a variety of vr content sessions and meet and mingle with other vr creators. get your #sdc2017 reduced tickets now using code sdcvru

charlotte allen 01 44 yeah, absolutely the b best of galaxy store awards were created to recognize apps that have stood out amongst the crowd in the us galaxy store we look for excellence in innovation, design, creativity, quality and performance so i've been with samsung for several years now and they know that we've been doing this award show during that time but when did the awards first start, the program was launched in 2018 as a pilot, recognizing just five galaxy store publishers our goal in creating the program was to acknowledge and celebrate the contributions of designers developers to samsung's ecosystem tony morelan 02 23 this will be the third year then charlotte allen 02 27 right we are now in our third year, as you said, we increase the awards to five categories in over 20 winners so we've come a long way in three short years, and we expect to continue to grow the best up galaxy store awards program in the future so where were those previous award shows held the inaugural best of galaxy store award ceremony in 2018, was held at the samsung developer conference at the moscone center in san francisco last year's award ceremony was held at sdc 2019, at the san jose convention center and we recognize 25 developers and designers from around the world and 21 of those winners were in attendance, which was great to see and he showed us how important this recognition is from samsung tony morelan 03 14 yeah, i was actually the host of the award show last year in san jose and that was my highlight was actually meeting these developers for the first time, you know, we've been communicating with them, you know, throughout the year, but to actually meet them face to face, and to see how rewarding it was for them to receive this award that was definitely an amazing moment charlotte allen 03 34 yeah, i agree it was also, i think, rewarding and inspiring for us to see, you know, their excitement and just how much effort they put into getting their work yeah, definitely let's talk about some of these past recipients but where's the best way for people to learn, like who won in 2018, who won in 2019 so we have a great list of winners now, having done this for two years and going into our third so a list with our past winners can be found on samsung's developer program site on the best of galaxy store landing page, and it features over 30 step galaxy store award winners and that is tony morelan 04 12 developer samsung com and if you go there, you can navigate over to the to the galaxy award page yes, charlotte allen 04 19 yes, you can tony morelan 04 21 so having done this now for several years, i'm sure you've got a highlight tell me you know if you have a special story about maybe a past winner, charlotte allen 04 28 yeah, there are several that come to mind but one that i'll share is we awarded bergen for best new watch face designer, and his award was picked up by the uruguay embassy who tweeted a congratulations to bergen and i thought that was really amazing tony morelan 04 44 that is and bergen is honestly an amazing designer ton of success he was the designer when i was first looking into starting myself selling watch faces i was seeing his work and i thought my god this guy is putting out you know; insanely creative watch faces and my goal was to try and you know, do something at his level i mean, he just amazing detail amazing depth, amazing features so when i was starting out, he was the one that i looked up to trying to emulate, you know, his success so great to see that he was awarded that year charlotte allen 05 20 wow, pretty, pretty amazing tony morelan 05 22 so who qualifies for you know, potentially winning a best of galaxy store award? charlotte allen 05 27 all galaxy store publishers qualify for bigger well-known brands to indie developers, designers, they all qualify tony morelan 05 33 that's, that's, that's great they'd love to see how open samsung is that? you know, it's not just a developer that is a big brand name but you know, we'd like to recognize even the small person, the indie developer, who is absolutely, you know, maybe doesn't have all of that experience, but it's still putting out great content so i thought it would be exciting if we actually brought somebody from the galaxy store team onto our podcast today so i would like to welcome hyunah kwon hi, hyunah hi, tony hi, charlotte thanks for inviting me so you are director of product galaxy store and games? can you tell me how long have you been in that role? hyunah kwon 06 13 i've been in this role since this year to work for galaxy store and games i've been in samsung for about 13 years, starting with my experience in mobile devices in different product management in this domain of mobile and we're very excited to expand to service businesses in samsung, and i'm in charge of galaxy store app as well as gaming ecosystem tony morelan 06 42 in samsung i had no idea you actually had been at samsung for that long can you tell us what is new with the galaxy store? hyunah kwon 06 48 yes, this year has been a full of exciting news and updates and changes with the galaxy store, we just launched a new version introducing an enhanced game discovery experience as you know, samsung has been fully committed to offer an excellent mobile gaming experience with our hardware it could be like this stunning screen experiences long battery and very powerful performance on a mobile gaming and now galaxy, gamers can actually visit the galaxy store to discover new games and they can view these stunning videos to learn more about the new games, they can pre-register for the upcoming seasons of their favorite games, and so forth for that we can also share more details and we also had interesting gear for all types of apps and content we've been seeing a growing consumption of digital contents in the context of endemic as you know so on the other hand, some people say that they're having a digital fatigue, if you will, caused by these exceptional circumstances so we worked on simplifying this experience and make the downloading experience really quick and easy for our consumers, helping users to find the content they need with the better fit recommendations, as well as our editors recommendations for them as well and we also refreshed our design with a clean and harmonious look for example, now you will see it very reduced banner sizes here and there, we ensure that pleasant browsing experience and downloading and the best part is the exclusive benefits that our consumers love about galaxy store so we offer new promotions events almost every week for example, in the us market remember, we integrated samsung rewards last year so that users could spam their points against their purchase in our store earlier this year since july, we launched an always on points earning program so now users can earn three points for every dollar spent with whether you purchase an app or a theme or enough items in your game app so the more they enjoy galaxy store, and the more they can get rewarded tony morelan 09 09 know that is specifically for us customers, correct? hyunah kwon 09 14 yes, so many other countries could have some different programs but this is in the us that sounds amazing tony morelan 09 21 so i thought it was interesting you said that because of the pandemic because of covid that you've actually seen an increase in people using their apps, and then they're starting to get the fatigue with it is that that's correct hyunah kwon 09 33 yes so the pandemic has been overwhelming for everyone, for sure but it also was a great opportunity for some in many app developers so we could see gaming industry, for example, has been really booming utilizing this opportunity and media, the chance watching videos, or checking on news and healthcare app that user can you know, i actually spend a lot more time on the at home so things like health care at home improvement apps has been actually pretty popular too and overall, we had really great and busy year, we'll collaborate with our developers this year to help them really growing tony morelan 10 18 yeah, that's, that's great to see that, you know, even though this is, you know, an unfortunate thing that our world is going through with a pandemic, that you found ways to help people out more, you know, considering that they are having to better devices and access this information so you had mentioned also that you're involved with the gaming aspect of it can you tell me, are there any new features for gamers? hyunah kwon 10 38 yes, so we have simply fire up in two parts one is the gaming another part is the access all the collection of the contents that we provide for galaxy users so in that game tab, you will see an immersive the game discovery area if you think about gaming in general has been developing, you now see a games that are very spectacular, they have a story in it, you can interact multiple players all together, you can create a history or you can, you know, be really in a deeper side of your action all of that is pretty similar in movie industry, if you think about it so when you watch a movie, you generally check a minute the trailer just to make sure you are watching a good movie, it's the same for games, we're providing our gamers the ability to discover what this game is about, and how they would play the download this game another party's our game introduction page, what we call the detail page of the app has been recolored refreshed, so that they can actually see some very valid information about the games, we are providing a tag information, it can be something like this game is about a multiplayer game it's a strategy rpg, or if it's casual gaming, or this game is featuring a medieval setting, with all kinds of information like that we are including more than 300 pack information, so that you can really see what these game is characterized for also some real time stats-based information, like you can see all these games, some are very popular, there's 10,000 users downloading this game at the moment right now, or it can be you know, 300 people are actually playing this particular game and i think it's very important to highlight the personalized information is very key for our success as we mentioned earlier, this is very important for any user to enjoy their experience not spending too much time making their efforts, there's this fatigue about finding the right apps for me, etc so we also use a lot of user database recommendation that they can find the relevant game for them and lastly, our galaxy store has been very appreciated by our speed to download and installation so our consumers really love about our quick download feature, we actually feature this little button that you can directly install and download from what you're previewing from, you don't need to go through the detail page and click another time to download we're just giving them a direct access to download so we call we call that a quick download as well tony morelan 13 37 that's great i know that that is a feature that i would definitely appreciate so for developers that have joined the samsung developer program, how can members grow their user base in their revenue hyunah kwon 13 52 share our strategy is to empower our developer partners by enhancing our platform that support them so obviously, there's many ways to grow their apps and their performance there are many resources available, so publishers on the galaxy store to support their success and one thing that i'd like to highlight is these days, in particular, the app discovery is really diversifying so customers are learning about their new app that anymore in their app store like we did 10 years ago and they're actually learning from their friends and social media, a lot many different channels so the optimization of the contents inside our store is still being very important but managing growth from multi-channel approach becomes even more important galaxy store is having our batch feature galaxies or batches that drive customers from their multiple channel of discovery to galaxy store pages in a single click and that improves a conversion by optimizing your discovery channel as well as all the listing information, you're providing a nice detail page and we are going to provide more and more resources for you to optimize that listing information and grow the app developers revenues to help our developers succeed in their acquisition campaigns with the galaxy store or optimizing their customer journey from discovery to download we are also working with the leading mobile measurement partners so that developers can measure their campaign performance and to end with the accurate data and generally, what we would recommend as tactics for growth will be things like, you know, generating more traffic and top of the funnel traffic, and from there, how to optimize their download conversion and, as you know, download is not the end, most partners are frustrated, i get so many downloads, what i'm not where why am i not growing from there? i think we also can help on our developers to manage their paid conversion and retention, because retention also is a key for your success and growth and i would always advise people to lean into the customer lifetime value, rather than focusing on the download number itself tony morelan 16 21 can you tell me how developers can learn how to maximize their growth with the with the galaxy store? hyunah kwon 16 26 yes, sure so as i mentioned before, there's lots of packets of growth available so in terms of generating traffic, you can rely on us campaigns, it can be digital campaign, it can be social media campaigns, and we're going to be supportive on all your campaign executions if you need a specific resource to optimize your campaign, please reach out to our team as well, as very importantly, users are browsing from their search engine so obviously, the search engine optimization techniques, or search engine-based advertising, all this traffic and also come into our store and we can optimize that flow for your growth as well in terms of download conversion, which is happening within our app, we are continuously improving our detail page optimization tools, as well as we would encourage our developers to manage their own reviews of their apps so we are providing the way that the developers can prompt their reviews, and allowing their users to write the positive reviews about their apps so that we can also optimize our conversion that way, so that way, we are continuously updating our product and we believe it's important to provide our updated information on what developers can do with us so we are planning to provide all this further information through block past webinars and dedicated resources and now developer portal as soon as our new features on our platform is available so i would encourage all developers to visit our developer@samsung com and stay tuned for more updates and you can also sign up for our newsletter so that you can get this information available from galaxies tony morelan 18 25 yeah, in the in the link to sign up for the newsletter is developer samsung com/newsletter and i'll be sure to include all of these links that you've mentioned in the in the show notes so hyunah, i absolutely appreciate you taking the time to join me on the podcast today love seeing how the galaxy store is evolving and super excited with what's coming up in the near future so thanks again for joining us hyunah kwon 18 49 thanks, tony for inviting me to the podcast it was a pleasure tony morelan 18 54 so charlotte, getting back to the awards for this year i know that the pandemic obviously has affected everybody in in many different ways can you tell us how it's actually impacting the award show for this year? charlotte allen 19 07 it is in fact in many in person events this year as we know, including our best of galaxy store awards 2020 award ceremony, which is typically held at sdc our developer conference, this year's best of galaxy store awards 2020 ceremony will be held virtually, and premiered on youtube on december 9 2020 at 5pm pacific standard time so stay tuned to the best galaxy store awards page if you're not a member of our samsung developer program or bixby developers, now is a great time to register to get all the updates and features i just shared tony morelan 19 44 excellent so i know in the past, in order to attend the award show you had to attend our conference, which meant you had to come out to the bay area here and admission into the conference this year though, is that going to be different charlotte allen 19 55 the exciting thing for me is this year for the first time anyone can and attend and like you shared, the awards are typically held at our conference and even then, sometimes sessions conflict with our award ceremony but this year, anyone can attend and so we're really looking forward to having a great crowd attend this year's awards tony morelan 20 15 yeah, no, i am excited too, as well we talked about how the award show has been growing from originally, it was just the five awards and now we've expanded we're up over 20 awards can you talk about some of the new categories for this year? charlotte allen 20 28 yes, this year's awards will acknowledge over 20 winners in five categories and the categories include best app, this game best the best watch, and we've added bixby to this year's best of galaxy store awards and we're really excited about that tony morelan 20 44 yeah earlier this year, i did a podcast interview with roger kibbe, at bixby on the viv lab team so super excited they're going to be joining us and in awarding their developers yeah, that is very exciting talking about the winners can you tell me how are winners selected? charlotte allen 21 01 winners are selected by our galaxy store team who do a yearly editorial review of all apps published to the galaxy store? tony morelan 21 09 what would you say is the biggest challenge with the with the award selection? charlotte allen 21 14 i would say narrowing down the list of winners the galaxy store offers expertly curated quality apps, which means we have a lot of great apps on the galaxy store tony morelan 21 24 yeah, i know because i've been involved with the with the selection and awarding process and it is a challenge because you know, we've got a team that goes through all this and it makes their nominations and, and their selection as to who they think should win and sometimes you know what your favorite app may be different than my favorite app so we get to battle it out yeah, to figure out who is the winner for that award? yes so what is it that the samsung developer program team is doing to help promote the winners, charlotte allen 21 54 winners are featured in galaxy store merchandising for the award ceremony, we have a best of galaxy store press release that samsung does one winner per category is chosen to be featured in that press release however, winners can write a press release with a quote from samsung as well we do post winner developer marketing newsletters, blogs, and podcasts interviews tony morelan 22 16 yeah, i'm actually really looking forward to next season in the podcast where i get a chance to interview some of some of these winners for the best of awards that should be a lot of fun now that you and i and our team has been involved with a selection process for the awards can you tell me what is your favorite award? charlotte allen 22 36 hmm, that's a tough one i would say if i had to choose, i would say that collections, the theme collections and the watch collections because it shows a body of amazing work right and so i think that if i had to choose, i would say that be my favorite what about you? tony morelan 22 55 you know, my favorite, i think it's the fact that we do recognize those indie developers so it's the small, you know, new independent designer, that's they've just put together this amazing app and we're recognizing that so you don't have to be this big brand, you don't have to have, you know, a large collection, i love the fact that we are awarding those large collections, because it's an amazing, you know, opportunity for us to recognize when a designer has just got this amazing library of work but i'd love the fact that we also recognize that individual, one key design that just stands out so you know, you can even be the little developer and we're still going to find yeah, and then recognize you for your great work so what advice do you have for developers hoping to be considered for future awards? charlotte allen 23 45 the biggest advice i can share is marketing your work digitally socially, as it drives awareness, it drives, downloads, ratings, and reviews and if you have not already done so, download the galaxy batch, it supports marketing your ad driving users to the galaxy store to download or purchase your app so my biggest advice is, if you have not posted it to your site, i encourage you to do it today tony morelan 24 12 yeah, definitely and in the reason being is that we need you to show up on our radar so if you put out a great app, and it's not showing up in our in our analytics of you know, top selling apps or apps that are being downloaded, we're not going to find it so it's a great way for us to find your app is when you're doing all of that marketing push behind it, then once we see it, then we can dive into a little deeper and see if it's worthy of the award but yeah, you definitely have to get traction on your app from a social standpoint, that's a huge way for us to discover your apps so what's the best way for people to learn more about the best of galaxy store awards charlotte allen 24 54 we have a galaxy store landing page on our samsung developer program site and there, you'll find details about the program updates on the best of galaxy store awards 2020 and highlights from past year's awards, including winner interviews yeah tony morelan 25 09 and as a reminder, that is developer samsung com and from there, you can navigate over to the galaxy store awards page, all the links that we were mentioning, and the podcast will be included in the show notes so you can check there can you tell me, are there any upcoming news that you can share that's related to the award show? charlotte allen 25 29 we have some upcoming blogs, we're going to take a look back at some of last year's winners, highlight some of their successes, and really begin promoting the best of galaxy store awards 2020 as we get near to the virtual award ceremony, and we really can't wait tony morelan 25 47 yeah, and one thing i'd like to share is that we are working on a trailer a little teaser for the award show the trailer will be released exactly 30 days before the award show so on november 9, we will be releasing our little teaser trailer for the award show so be sure to stay tuned for that so charlotte, thank you very much for joining me on the podcast today and sharing all of the information about the award show really appreciate you coming on the podcast charlotte allen 26 16 thanks it's great to be back again tony morelan 26 18 and just to sign off, this is our final episode of season one of the podcast i hope you all have enjoyed not just this episode, but the prior 13 episodes that we did that make up season one of the power podcast we look forward to having you join us next year we're going to start the new year off with season two and we are really excited with the shows that were lining up and you definitely will be hearing from some of the winners of our best of galaxy store awards for 2020 so thank you very much outro 26 51 looking to start creating for samsung, download the latest tools to code your next app, or get software for designing apps without coding at all sell your apps to the world on the samsung galaxy store check out developer samsung com today and start your journey with samsung the pow! podcast is brought to you by the samsung developer program and produced by tony morelan

blogthe samsung developer conference (sdc) is coming soon! we’re looking forward to another opportunity to share new product information and updates to the platforms and tools that you use to make your own products. today, we’re talking with nicolás castro of bergen. bergen won a best of galaxy store award in 2018 for their beautiful and innovative galaxy watch watch faces. nicolas attended sdc in person to receive the award and learn from the technical sessions. at the time, he discussed what winning the award (video in spanish) meant to their company. we are taking this opportunity to discuss his experiences at the event and how he has succeeded with galaxy store. nicolás castro from bergen speaking at sdc 2018 (video in spanish) hi nicolás, thank you for joining us. tell us, "who is nicolás castro?" hi eric, and thanks for giving me this great space to talk and share my work. well, who is "nicolás castro"... i feel i could be writing for a while, haha. i have been a product designer for maybe more than 15 years. i live in montevideo, uruguay, a small and great country in south america. i am passionate about design—i think it shapes my everyday life, mainly focusing on working as a product designer, galaxy theme and galaxy watch face designer as well. i am a father of a child of about five years old named delfina, with whom also in our play times, we enjoy sketching and designing together. in my free time, which is tiny, i try to read and learn about ux and crypto art. i always leave time to do sport as well, i am an active person, and i am convinced that sport helps us to be more energic persons and healthy in body mind and soul. what can you share with us about bergen, your company? where did it start, who else is involved, etc. the bergen startup was born at the end of 2017 and focused on creating watch faces. before that, i worked as a ux designer in a software company and then discovered this fantastic business. after some research about it, i could see great potential and opportunity, so i decided to quit my job and build a startup named bergen. before the pandemic, bergen was composed of about six people, some of them external collaborators. after the pandemic, the team was reduced to two people. these were difficult moments, but bergen was able to come out ahead. i want to mention a particular thing; many people ask me why the name bergen. it regards the meaning of the word that caught me: "mountain man who looks far." however, there are other meanings as well. bergen is a city in norway, which is beautiful, but i haven't been there yet! so, after winning two awards using its name, i think i should go in person... haha. what led you to creating watch faces for galaxy store? creating watch faces is a task that i am passionate about. since i was a child, i have always liked speedometers, rpm gauges, and car dashboards. i like speed, and i think there is something there that connects me and makes me enjoy it so much when designing. generally, bergen's style tends to be 3d oriented. we use graphics that stand out on the clock, always taking care of all the details. we prefer precise use of colors, contrasts, fonts, and the correct use of brightness and shadows. i focus on creating designs that reflect the users' personalities, the same thing that happens with clothing. nicolás castro from bergen accepting a best of galaxy store award from niklas lyback, director of galaxy store at samsung you attended sdc as a live event in 2018 and you received a best of galaxy store award for your watch face designs. what do you remember about the event? well, whenever i remember that moment, an immense joy comes over me. it was an incredible milestone in my life. i met many people, colleagues, and a large part of the samsung developers staff. i also remember the emotion of being the first award-winning designer in this type of category—that year, the award ceremony for watch face designers began. i would like to go back in time to feel the emotion of those days again—they were thrilling days. even the return to my country was incredible; my family, friends, and colleagues were waiting for me at the airport to celebrate. you received some extra publicity at the time from an unexpected source. how exciting was that? well, that was unexpected, and i was amazed when the us embassy in uruguay published a press release about it. that gave it even more significance to the event that had occurred. what are the most important things you learned at sdc? the most important thing was that people could achieve extraordinary things when they work with passion and ambition; they can cross many borders and create incredible opportunities. so i want to encourage everyone to learn about developing apps, designing galaxy themes, and galaxy watch faces. i'd like to invite those who want to learn to be successful watch face designers at facefy.org. in a previous blog post from 2018, you talked about your creative process. what process and tools do you use to go from ideas to finished product? have any parts of your creation process changed in four years? well, to be honest, not much has changed. my design process is the same: research, sketching, testing, creating the final design, iterating, and starting again. new editing tools have appeared, and that's a good thing, but the core of the creative process is the same. it is not recommended to design inside a program—they are used to build your creation, not to increase creativity. instead, grab a white paper and pen and draft your ideas! that is my standard method to design. some bergen watch face designs for galaxy watch your designs have a very striking visual style with sharp, angular features and bold colors. they look like they are made for active people. are these designs reflected in your own lifestyle? wow, you have good eyes. i am a person who does sports, such as biking, running, cross training, kart races, paragliding jumps, surfing, and playing football. the feeling of those styles is for active people! and of course, for those who want to experience energy 😊 this year, as the previous year, sdc will be a virtual event on october 12. what are you hoping to learn more about this year? this year i am very interested in continuing to learn about nfts as much as teaching people worldwide to create profitable watch faces. regarding nfts, i think there are many possibilities for many people, and it would be great if samsung put some eyes into it too—who knows, create a new side business in the virtual world. can you share where we see more of your work? gladly, here you go! instagram facebook https://www.facefy.org thank you for your time today, nicolás. perhaps in a future time, we can all meet in person again. hey eric, for sure! i love flying and traveling to the us occasionally, so i will gladly meet you again. thanks for your "buena onda" (good vibes and energy), as always. resources for sellers at galaxy store many thanks to nicolás for sharing his experiences with us. nicolás is one of the many entrepreneurs all over the world whose businesses are enabled by galaxy store. for more information on signing up and selling on galaxy store, look into the galaxy store documentation. for assistance with setting up and starting your sales campaigns, the galaxy store discussion forums are where you can get great insights from other sellers. we look forward to sdc 2022 on october 12. join us online to watch the keynote and learn in the technical sessions at samsungdeveloperconference.com. join us on twitter, facebook, linkedin, and youtube to continue the discussion.

david bitton 01 32 good thank you let me start by asking a basic question who is okay yeah aurelien lavaud 01 38 level i'm already a level global by director of business development gambler so my daily routine consists in creating and deploying public partnerships with manufacturers all around the world and what i love in this in this job is such gives me the chance to be at the front line of innovation, discovering new technological trends that i can then use to provide insight to a developer on teams and improve, keep improving your games so i also used to be on vr on the sides two years ago, you aflac i took part in the development of some iconic titles, such as the revamped versions of snake or tea trees so i try to always have this double heart with the understanding of technical feasibility within the business model, the business directions we want to implement on a more personal level, i'm fortunate to be based in vietnam, in southeast asia, very beautiful new age, and i will i highly recommend to visit if you're into hiking, or kayaking me to an amazing wildlife so that's what i'm trying to do enjoy as much as i can on my feet hi david bitton 02 48 yeah, that sounds exciting, especially because i'm based in korea so that's not that that's far so yeah, that could be a great a great opportunity can you talk a little bit more about the history of gameloft? aurelien lavaud 03 04 certainly so gamma was created in 2000, with a patient for games and the desire to bring them to even more pay on the war by bringing the wonders of games to mobile devices, we have creating a one new market that became 20 years later, the biggest market in gaming so what we did over the years was shipping companies to be able to deliver this vision and today we are 4600 employees, over 17 developers to throw the war and where people are working hard to bring new games to a wide range of devices with ad hoc or patient david bitton 03 46 that that's great you said that you have 17 development studios around the world so that's quite big, more than 4000 employees and you also have a very large game portfolio so, again last is it like the more games, the better? aurelien lavaud 04 04 well, i talk all we want everyone to play and we believe there's a different game for everyone so no matter the device, language, the region or the general, we try to make it available so having a very powerful you come with logic and we provide for brain wide range of different experiences for a wide range of people preferences david bitton 04 30 okay just to dive a little bit more into your, into this samsung partnership out of curiosity, how long have you been working with samsung as a partner? and how did that start? because i guess, from what i know, that's, that's quite a long-time partnership here that we are talking about aurelien lavaud 04 51 yes, we have been working with them for more than 15 years wow so we started on the feature phones at the time java devices were king dennis pink starting to pick up on truth 2010 with project on the first something series, and we had the asphalt wcag series that we signed that was memorable, made a lot of noise and later on in 2019, we are refreshed and we started our collaboration with another big name game of catalog with yes one nine on the galaxy app store that was off a long list of games coming david bitton 05 34 as we as we know game lost is also a part of the of the vivendi group which is a global entertainment and media company so how do you see opportunities and synergies not only internally within your different business units and sister companies but also externally with your partnership with samsung aurelien lavaud 05 59 we have already been developing great synergies, especially with kind of priests we developed by putting on a run and we walked into with universal music on the fallout by integrating in as well i, i see on some of the older partnerships like disney, we were working with them before prior to the acquisition david bitton 06 20 and speaking of these of these games, you mentioned that disney for example what are the games currently included in the in the partnership does the first question and second question for you would be what were the criteria to include them in the in the partnership? aurelien lavaud 06 39 usually we started with asphalt 9 games it was perfect timing because we are now celebrating the 15th birthday of our series happy birthday thank you so i will introduce later you can reach asphalt 9 facebook page or we also have a dedicated website as www asphalt9 com where you can discover everything about just full series along these 15 years and you can enjoy some, some gift that can take part to some to some get involved into the hype game and david bitton 07 23 i will certainly do that yeah, aurelien lavaud 07 24 thank you for furthering the discussion after asphalt nine we started working on dragon manual agents together at disney magic kingdom and legally it wasn't necessary great now we are also working on some stuff too and we are planning to release in next month on the samsung galaxy app store david bitton 07 46 great, great so more and more games are coming but if we if we want to get a little bit more specifics on the asphalt 9 because there was a second of the aurelien lavaud 07 58 game here asphalt 9 offers like a fully licensed cars so initially how much time did it take for us for asphalt nine to team to convince the most prestigious brands to join the game to create enough momentum to stop the engine? no pun intended so yeah, we've been working with car manufacturer for more than 15 years now so the process was asphalt nine was actually quite smooth, because we had already a lot of a lot of partners on board what happened is that we present into game to twitch partner and we are all very excited to be part of the adventure so we got already all most of most of all, car manufacturers david bitton 08 48 some early discussion to launching a model from a new car manufacturer earlier, how long does it usually take to incorporate this discard into the into the game aurelien lavaud 09 00 while dvd it will already depend licensor for the partners we already work with, it's pretty fast, it's a human but on the partner we want the new partners that we want to integrate into games to work with us we need to pitch the game first and then create some legal contracts and we are more on we own a few months up to one year david bitton 09 29 and now that asphault nine is celebrating its 15th birthday so that's kind of nice teenager and is getting also more popular do car manufacturers also promote a sold night in their own channels? aurelien lavaud 09 45 yeah, i put is a very interesting that they do we recently launched into the coming season and license or use these two promos, every kid on their social network oh great great on top of that, with longtime relationship with bree to them we are often walking in close partnership to have some unique experience to our users so as an example, we collaborated recently with lamborghini so top players could be invited in lamborghini hq in italy david bitton 10 20 i think there was a mistake here because i didn't get invited so i would love to maybe to play a little bit more on the on assaulter so, aurelien lavaud 10 31 yes, train a train half an hour and you may be the next one david bitton 10 35 okay, okay so i will play and repeat just for a forum actually, the samsung ran many asphault nine tournaments included, including in the netherlands, korea, the us at our annual developer conference in south africa as well when usually trying to promote the launch of new devices like galaxy note 10, for example, or when running some events like galaxy studio around the world so thanks to them to the customization of this publicly available ap can gain we could we could offer a unique experience to our users so i guess that the different teams involved the there must have had some extra hours of developing testing and as we said, playing as well right in the tribe we have been putting a lot of work on this live demo units, give you some numbers we are looking at around 300 hours of testing wow so that was heavy, but i needed to make sure all the products were top notch yeah and our latest developer conference in the in the us, you went on stage to receive a best of a world in the in the racing category for us asphalt 9 so what was your feeling regarding this, this event aurelien lavaud 12 16 that we're feeling was amazing i mean from via reception or via word to the game booth that was welcoming a huge crowd of people eager to play asphault nine on the lattice samsung galaxy fold it was three more i believe in david bitton 12 33 and in speaking of galaxy fold, actually, you also on book two to create a customized version of the game for galaxy fold that that would support app continuity so from your side, partner perspective, what were the lessons learned there during this, this approach and the development? aurelien lavaud 12 57 i think this project was particular interesting because quilted was new for the team they had never been walking on, on this feature so what they were discovering, and they were eating, they were eating some wood blocks so at some points, they weren't progressing anymore and that's where they started, we started to connect or different developers seem together with your ui on the team at samsung and we were able to overcome to overcome the difficulties that both teams were working together to deliver our very nice products and to make sure that we can keep this continuity and move from one screen to another two tablets off when we opened it to the device, without any interruption without any change so it was quite collaboration and we learned a lot from this david bitton 13 52 let's switch gears here and admit and let's talk about the future if i if i may so 90s is right now in full, full speed again, happy birthday assault without revealing any trade secrets, i was wondering what would trigger the release of assault then? would that be like a new game engine on which you're working on or some kind of revolutionary user experience? could you could you share a little bit more about that? aurelien lavaud 14 26 should they so i will probably disappoint everybody but at the moment we are not planning to release something yet there's a reason behind is that there are a lot of work to do on asphault nine so as for nine i've never been so successful there are plenty of new features and contents we are planning to offer on asphault nine so objective is really to prove us on nine first, to focus on innovation to make sure we can integrate new features new contents, new cars, new tracks to deliver perfect and expanse of course will promote ensuring new technologies as well and there will be integrated into us online but no vision at the moment for us have felt any relief because we still have so much work to do and david bitton 15 14 understood so, as you as you mentioned, you said that you regularly add content you features so, would you have any exciting location coming up soon for as for nine aurelien lavaud 15 28 bring a new location is always a very important part of the game because it helps us to rediscover the game unfortunately, i will not be able to deliver any information in wales next tracks will be what i can do is to invite user to general on a facebook page where we are trying to keep the hype to make the user guess what is the next track so you can take parts to the discussion, you can get involved on the facebook page you will get more insights step by step on the new tracks we are planning to release okay? okay the other thing i can tell is that we also have this this content creator opportunity so you can go on www asphaultnine com/creators and he, you can take part into the content creation show interested so you can get more insight on where the game is heading you can get more involved into the game okay, okay, a way to keep the hype going david bitton 16 30 your team i mean, the asphalt 19 aurelien lavaud 16 34 as a unique expertise in racing, modeling cause even experiencing crashes, for example so, actually, i have two questions here is their first any plan to leverage this expertise for a new racing game from the same team does the first question and second question more generally, how much of transferable skills feels a dedicated studio team can have when it comes to creating games indeed, we have some studios that are specialized in different games but overall, there's a lot of shared knowledge and synergies between the different teams so, our promise to you is the same for you or at company level we work on different types of titles, different types of channels and different for different audiences but based on the resources leads based on the experience of the team, we will be able to be flexible and to bring people to support us our team to allocate resources differently on the project that we need needs to last so we always try to develop or games or team and grow people to make sure they can, they can move to a different type of projects to a difference a different type of develop different type of skills and they can yeah david bitton 18 01 okay, okay great, great going back to this partnership with samsung, any exciting plan you would like to develop in the, in the future with a samsung any, any specific any specific ideas that you that you would have to grow to grow the business aurelien lavaud 18 18 actually we are very open and now since we started with the partnership we were really impressed with all the innovations you guys we are bringing so we could be looking at other new technologies from artificial intelligence to augmented reality virtual reality cloud gaming we are going to explore it a bit everything and we just probably need the time to see what kind of walk and how we can do this together david bitton 18 54 exciting just between you and me if you will to own one of these hyper cars that that are available in asphalt nine if you if you don't have the already, which one? would it be? would you have any preference for a specific hyper car? and second question, where would you drive this car? aurelien lavaud 19 17 unfortunately, i do not have any of these cats i wish i did i wish i do but no, i have a sweet spot for the cats sharon i would i think it would be quite nice to drive it on the italian coast so we could have a clever, nice, nice view on the mediterranean sea and enjoy the ride david bitton 19 44 okay, this this sounds nice yeah just to just to finish here with a last question we do have any closing comments for developers out there? aurelien lavaud 19 57 yes as a matter of fact i have so we were very happy with sort of the experience we do guys is i think it's a very good experience to walk with samsung in the way that you've always been super supportive so i was about studying when we were developing dual screen, the team was the wizard team was hitting some roadblocks and, and in both for the teams working together, to fix everything, and to bring things forward we were also quite impressed with all those new features and new technologies you are developing on your recent models and for us, give us a way to improve the game experience for the user to provide to users new features, and to deliver a more memorable game experience david bitton 20 48 okay, yeah so, two things that are here for to do thank you first happy birthday again to the asphalt franchise and second, thanks thank you for your time again i hope we could we could shed some light on our partnership between samsung and again last and also get developers excited so earlier thank you thank you again for your time aurelien lavaud 21 16 thank you very much for the invitation on this podcast was very, very interesting and i really hope we can develop new technologies and develop organs further on samsung devices outro 21 30 looking to start creating for samsung, download the latest tools to code your next app, or get software for designing apps without coding at all sell your apps to the world on the samsung galaxy store check out www developersamsung com today and start your journey with samsung the pow! podcast is brought to you by the samsung developer program and produced by tony morelan

bloghello readers! 👋🏾 it’s lola here and i’m here to catch you up on what we’ve been up to the last month and what you can look forward to this month. things have been busy on the team with lots of planning, coding and writing! last year i began a series looking at privacy on the web, particularly the new apis being proposed in the w3c privacy community group, and now the w3c private advertising community group. last month i posted parts 3 and 4 of both, looking at the first party sets and topics api proposals respectively. it’s often difficult to know how these standards translate to real-world impact and use but hopefully my explainers do a decent job of clarifying some of the hard-to-get bits. more from our advocates laura participated in the online edition of jsworld conference, her talk “behind the scenes of a service worker” dove into the cycle of a service worker and she shared some offline strategies. the online series are completely free and open to the public. sylvester wrote about rendering 2d and 3d animations “blazingly fast” on the samsung galaxy watch using webgl. all you need is some javascript and sys-admin knowledge to get things running on your own smart watch! ada has been working on adding support for magnetic grab points in handy-controls so that if something is grabbable in the xr world, like a handle, then your hand will automatically stick to the right location when you approach it making things feel a lot more tactile. releases we’ve shipped 16.2 stable! 🎉 16.2 improves dark mode and enables our device posture api for folding screens by default. you can always find samsung internet and samsung internet beta respectively. we’ll also be releasing 17.0 beta later in march so look out for it! where to find us you’ll see our advocates in the following events in the coming months. ada will be speaking about augmented reality at cityjs on the 23-25 march, regent street cinema in london, uk. find out more at https://cityjsconf.org/. laura will be hosting a workshop this 19th march for women in steam at scientista conference, a student’s club from the university of toronto. check the event here: https://scientistauoft.wixsite.com/uoftscientista/conference laura will be also talking at international women’s day hosted by gdg cloud london talking about accessibility on the web. you can register here. the polys, awards for webxr, will be returning for another great night highlighting some of the best webxr experiences from the past year. ada will be participating alongside the other chairs of the immersive web working group which are developing the api. subscribe! get these updates directly to your inbox by subscribing to our newletter!
