Using In-App Events To Find The Right Users

editor’s note: oath ad platforms is a samsung partner and leader in native advertising solutions. to learn more about in-app event optimization or marketing your app on galaxy apps, bixby home, or game launcher through oath ad platforms, contact hellonative@oath.com. the app ecosystem is always evolving, providing both opportunities and challenges for app developers. take the following stats:* given the state of app discovery, user acquisition strategy shifts from getting installs to reaching the right users. fortunately, every app has certain in-app events that serve as signposts to identify likely long-term users. optimizing user acquisition for these events increases your odds of finding regular users. identifying key in-app events many in-app events are universal, but the importance of each event can vary widely. tracking events is critical to understanding their relative importance. take paid apps, where developers track first purchases as a milestone. however, depending on the maturity of the app or the nature of the offering, the number of first purchase conversions might be insignificant. when developers lack a meaningful sample size of conversions, they should identify proxy events. working backwards, these proxies translate into a user funnel. as an example, let’s look at a mobile game and work backwards. before an in-app purchase, a user needs to visit a storefront or see an offer. typically, a user won’t do so until they’re low on in-game currency. what does it take to get a user to that point? engagement. if gameplay is unique, completing a tutorial could be important as well. putting it together, we arrive at the following user funnel: tip: each step in the funnel can be broken down further as needed. for instance, the “visit storefront” step could include adding an item to cart. using in-app events to drive user acquisition after identifying in-app events that correlate with key conversions, developers who run paid app-install campaigns can optimize for these events instead of installs alone. in other words, rather than seeking any user who will install your app, you can now target users who are most likely to complete a tutorial or sign up for a free trial. this enables developers to minimize dollars spent on users who install apps but don’t convert into profitable users. at oath ad platforms, we run “in-app event optimization” campaigns across our 1 billion users worldwide by leveraging trillions of mobile signals ranging from a user’s recently used apps to his or her past purchases. whenever a new user converts on an in-app event, our algorithm becomes better and better at recognizing users with similar patterns who are more likely to complete that event as well. in one recent success story, a leading rideshare app teamed up with oath to target users who completed an in-app event of taking a first ride. with oath’s data signals and algorithm, the app was able to scale “first riders” by 10x with a 78% lower cost-per-conversion. tip: if you are having trouble scaling an in-app event optimization campaign, it likely means there aren’t enough signals (i.e., conversions) for an ad platform’s algorithm to find users who are likely to convert. in this case, developers can “move up the funnel” and optimize towards in-app events that are more common, yet still correlated with a desired milestone. in conclusion it all starts with tracking and identifying your most impactful in-app events. once you identify these, not only can you build a better app experience but you can also leverage that understanding to acquire the right users. see vice president of product management, michael albers’ presentation on reaching your audience through bixby home at the samsung developers conference.

Improve Your GearVR Development: Tips from SDC2017 Sponsor, Unity

unity supports a wide variety of features and systems that can be leveraged in any gearvr application, and we are very excited to be part of sdc2017. this year, we’re looking forward to showing you how to take your vr experiences to the next level with the new gearvr controller. before you arrive at sdc2017, i want to be sure you have a strong vr-knowledge base for how to make your gearvr app smoother. here are my top 4 tips for putting the finishing touches on your gearvr project. 1. streamline your development with this script in unity, there are a couple steps you can take to simulate mobile vr inside of the editor. the gearvr headset only tracks the user's head rotation. to simulate this in the editor, you can attach a script to the main camera that rotates the camera based on mouse position. using system.collections; using system.collections.generic; using unityengine; public class vrcameralook : monobehaviour { transform transform; **void** start () { transform = getcomponent<transform>(); } **void** update () { #if unity_editor transform.localrotation = quaternion.euler(-input.mouseposition.y, input.mouseposition.x, 0); #endif } } with this script you can build up functionality and features in a more streamlined manner. 2. simulate headset input for a smoother workflow another really good tip for building an application in the editor is using input.getmousebuttondown(0) as a form of input. this is convenient because of the way unity handles input across different platforms. for the gearvr mouse, button 0 is the same input callback for when you touch the touchpad on the headset; for a pc mouse button, 0 is the left-mouse button. with this setup, you can test and iterate faster by staying in the unity editor and only building to the device for more complex functionality. 3. add an extra dimension with 360 video playback unity’s native video player has support for many different formats, including 360. this allows you to easily play any 360 content you have inside your applications. with a special skybox shader developed by unity, you can also play this content in the ‘backdrop’ of any scene you make. you can transition between videos easily and even drop 3d objects and models inside of your 360 videos for more interactivity. 4. profile early and often to track issues for any mobile vr application, optimizations and performance are crucial for creating a good user experience. unity allows you to auto-connect the profiler as well as remote-debug your application from the editor. you can see more about how the profiler works and gain an understanding of the graphs and interface here. this will allow you to track down expensive processes or troublesome code in your applications. register for sdc2017 today to find out more useful tips and get a better understanding of how to use the new gearvr controller with unity, come to my talk, thinking beyond a rotation-only controller, at the samsung developer conference in san francisco, oct 18-19, 2017. in this talk, we’ll also discuss unity analytics and how it helps you improve your game and retain your customers. please also join us for the “towards an ai driven open metaverse” panel session where unity’s director of ai research, nicolas meuleau will join otoy’s ceo, jules urback. and finally please don’t forget to visit us at the unity booth to check out our latest release and demos!

New Developer Features for the Galaxy Note9 S Pen

with the launch of the new samsung galaxy note9 comes all new features for the s pen. developers now have the ability to utilize the new ble (bluetooth low energy) remote technology connection. from a distance, users are able to control app features with either a single or double press of the s pen button. using the s pen as a shutter remote, users can now control the note9 camera from a distance. just point, pose and take your photo from anywhere. you can also control your media with the s pen. play, pause and advance your presentation slides, pause movies and skip songs, all with the press of a button. with its fine 0.7mm tip and 4096 levels of pressure, the s pen has precise control and responsiveness. visit the samsung developer website to learn more about the s pen, the bluetooth low energy technology, and the s pen framework. sample app: s pen remote download the new s pen sample app and see how you can take advantage of these new features. sample code: implementation of remoteactions specifying the keyevent to be mapped to the s pen remote event in a manifest check for the activity to handle the keyevent in a manifest file (androidmanifest.xml). add <intent-filter> and <meta-data> elements to that activity. an .xml resource file defining remoteactions must be specified for <meta-data>. <manifest xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android> package="com.samsung.android.blesample "> <application ... > <activity android:name="sampleactivity" > <intent-filter> <action android:name="com.samsung.android.support.remote_action" /> </intent-filter> <meta-data android:name="com.samsung.android.support.remote_action" android:resource="@xml/remote_action_sample"/> </activity> ... </application> </manifest> _*_only 1 remoteaction per app is allowed at the moment. if you define remoteactions to several activities, all other except one may be ignored. create an .xml file under res/xml/. (name the file with the same name as the resource specified in step 2.) xml has a root element of , and may include several elements. in addition, each contains information about id, label, priority, trigger_key, etc. <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <remote-actions version="1.0"> <action id="page_down" label="@string/page_down" priority="1" trigger_key=" page_down "> </action> <action id="page_up" label="@string/ page_up" priority="2" trigger_key="page_up"> </action> <action id="right" label="@string/start_activity" priority="3" trigger_key="ctrl+left+n "> </action> </remote-actions> element element implementation of keyevent-callback implement the keyevent-callback to the activity to which the remoteactions have been declared. since it is the same as handling an android keyevent, only the simple examples of the implementation are introduced here. please refer to the android developers website for detailed guidelines. it is recommended to handle the sent keyevent at onkeydown. example : page down key: scroll scrollview as much as +500 in y direction. page up key: scroll scrollview as much as -500 in y direction. ctrl + n: open sampleactivity2. `public class sampleactivity extends activity { private scrollview mscrollview; @override protected void oncreate(@nullable bundle savedinstancestate) { super.oncreate(savedinstancestate); setcontentview(r.layout.sample_activity1_layout); mscrollview = (scrollview) findviewbyid(r.id.scroll_view); } @override public boolean onkeydown(int keycode, keyevent event) { if (keycode == keyevent.keycode_page_down) { mscrollview.smoothscrollby(0, 500); } else if (keycode == keyevent.keycode_page_up) { mscrollview.smoothscrollby(0, -500); } else if ((event.getmetastate() & keyevent.meta_ctrl_on) != 0 && keycode == keyevent.keycode_n) { intent intent = new intent(this, sampleactivity2.class); startactivity(intent); } ... return super.onkeydown(keycode, event); } }` *pay attention to cases when the child view consumes the keyevent. for example, if the edittext is focused on a screen where the edittext co-exists, most keyevents will be consumed for text inputs or a cursor movement and they may not be sent to the activities or container layouts. on this screen, you must specify the key code or key combination that the child view cannot consume. learn more about developing for the s pen at this year's samsung developer conference.
