      Always-on States

always-on states always-on states are designed to display the time information with ultra-low power consumption. galaxy watch studio automatically generates an always-on version of your watch face. because the always-on state is set as low power mode, there is restriction to represent the color. samsung recommends a design that uses no more than 15% of the available pixels in always-on states. if your watch faces use significantly more than that, they will be rejected. if an always-on version of your watch face is not created, a default version will be displayed. for more detail on designing and developing always-on states watch face, see watch face states tip : galaxy watch studio is now checking the always-on states when it starts to build. if it uses more than 15% of the available pixels in always-on states, build process is suspended. if it exceeds temporarily, the watch face could be build. however, the store registration can be rejected while the quality verification process or it can be canceled by the user complaints even if it is on sale. step 1. create an always-on version automatically click the always-on state button to generate an always-on version of your watch face automatically. click 1 turn on always-on state. step 2. change the design galaxy watch studio will initially generate your always-on state automatically. you can use this in the final product, or modify it if it’s not suitable. you can also design your own always-on watch face with a limited number of features and functions. step 3. switch back to active view once you’re happy with your always-on watch face, continue with the rest of your design by switching back to active mode. note : high color always-on states can only be used on gear s3 or newer devices. if one of these watch faces is installed on a device that’s older than that, only the basic always-on state will be displayed.

      Gyro

gyro add movement to your watch face that’ll make your design stand out from the rest. gyro effect add gyro effects to your watch face and see how it moves and changes appearance as you tilt your watch. the aspects of watch face components that you can change include size, inner pivot position, rotation and opacity. you can use the gyro effect tab to tweak the x and y rotation dimensions of objects independently to create 3d effects for your watch face. the watch gyroscope gyro effects are applied as the watch moves within the -90º to 90º range along the x and y axes. 0º indicates that the watch is level. watch faces can also change appearance when the watch moves clockwise or counter-clockwise. -90º on the x axis indicates that the watch has rotated 90º upwards along the x axis (counter-clockwise). conversely, 90º indicates that the watch has rotated 90º downwards along the x axis (clockwise). -90º on the y axis indicates that the watch has rotated 90º to the left (counter-clockwise). conversely, 90º on the y axis indicates that the watch has rotated 90º to the right (clockwise). gyro effects let you adjust the dimensions, inner pivot positions, rotation, and opacity of objects in your watch face. tip : you can only enter values for each property for the -90º to 90º range. gyro effects won’t work unless the absolute values of each property’s reference points are equal. for example, inner pivot x can’t use -90 and 45 as its reference points, but it can use -45 and 45. the values you enter will determine how much the actual value of the property will change with respect to the base value. the actual value will be calculated through linear interpolation using the values at -90º and 90º. for example, if you enter values of -90 and +90 for inner pivot x to allow a range of -90º to 90º, then inner pivot x will be +80 px of the base value when the watch is rotated 80º. there are three different tabs (gyro xy, gyro x, gyro y) for applying gyro effects. gyro xy properties are always applied, regardless of the axis of rotation. tip : you can only change each property in one tab. for example, if a rotation value is entered in the gyro x tab, then the rotation value cannot be entered in the gyro y or gyro xy tabs. the gyro x and gyro y tabs allow you to control the properties when the watch rotates along the x and y axes respectively, so you can use these gyro properties independently to create a variety of cool effects. let’s take a look at how the dimension property can be used to create watch faces. when the watch is laid flat with no tilt in any direction (0º along both the x and y axes), the dimension values of the watch face are at 100% (case 1 below). any movement downwards or to the right will incrementally increase this percentage up to a maximum of 200%. any movement upwards or to the left will decrease this percentage down to a minimum of 0%. in the example above: 2 if the watch rotates -90º along the x axis or -90º along the y axis, the object will shrink and disappear from the screen (0%). 3 if the watch rotates 90º along the x axis or 90º along the y axis, the object will double in size in that direction (200%). 4 if the watch rotates along both the x and y axes, the properties entered for both axes will be applied simultaneously. if the watch rotates in opposite directions along the x and y axes, then the object will stretch vertically or horizontally. 5 if the watch rotates in the same direction along the x and y axes, then the object will increase or decrease in size. resize enlarge and shrink an object in relation to a point at its center. the point will remain in the same position as the object gets bigger or smaller. move change the position of an object using a point at its center. the value of the position input field is based on the center of the object. rotation rotate an object based on a point at its center. rotations will not change the position of the object. tip : tip! when entering an exact value in the gyro input field, it’s important to anticipate an object’s position and dimension changes. place the object to see how it looks and where it is located at -90 or +90. then enter the difference value into the gyro input field so that the object reaches the desired end position. adding depth to watch faces create dynamic watch faces with a sense of depth. step 1. create a shadow use a tool like photoshop or sketch to make shadows for your objects. step 2. place the shadow place the shadows above the background images, and below the watch components. step 3. apply gyro effects apply the following gyro effects to the shadows. in the gyro x tab – inner pivot x: +5px to -5px. in the gyro y tab – inner pivot y: +5px to -5px. adding a level to watch faces use gyro effects to create a watch face with integrated level functions. step 1. create step-wise images use a tool like photoshop or sketch to create a series of images that gradually decrease in size. step 2. place the step-wise images place the images in order based on size, with the largest image at the bottom. step 3. apply gyro effects apply gyro effects to the images. the bottom-most image should have the smallest value, and the top-most image the largest. the images in-between should have gradually decreasing values. for example, you can apply the following values: 14 px, 20 px, 30 px, 40 px. the bottom-most image: in the gyro x tab – inner pivot y: +14 px to -14 px. in the gyro y tab – inner pivot x: +14 px to -14 px. the top-most image: in the gyro x tab – inner pivot y: +40 px to -40 px. in the gyro y tab – inner pivot x: +40 px to -40 px. adding parallax effects to watch faces use gyro effects to create a watch face with parallax effects. step 1. create the images use a design tool like photoshop or sketch to create images for the effect: a background image and a number of png images to be placed on top. for this example, we will create a watch face showing someone floating in a tube. step 2. place the images place the background image at the bottom, then overlay the images for the tube shadow, waves, and person/tube in that order. step 3. apply gyro effects apply the following gyro effects to the images for the tube shadow, waves, and person/tube. tube shadow: in the gyro x tab – inner pivot y: +10 px to -10 px. in the gyro y tab – inner pivot x: +15 px to -15 px. waves: in the gyro x tab – inner pivot y: +10 px to -10 px. in the gyro y tab – inner pivot x: +10 px to -10 px. person/tube : in the gyro x tab – inner pivot y: -35 px to +35 px. in the gyro y tab – inner pivot x: -40 px to +40 px. for more details on producing dynamic gyro effects, take a look at the sample watch faces included with gws or check out the gyro presets in complications > effects.

build and upload your watch designs if you want to learn how to upload your watch face for tizen 4.0 device (galaxy watch) and tizen 3.0 or older devices (gear s3 or older models) at the same time, please see how to upload watch faces for galaxy watch and older gear devices? faq build you need to go through the build process to produce a .tpk file. this is the type of file that you upload to the store. step 1. build select build from the menu bar. click 1 click project > buildor click 2 click the build button. step 2. build a .tpk save the .tpk file in a folder. once the build is finished, upload your watch face to the store. note : the gws project name is used to name the .tpk file. because seller portal does not accept filenames that contain spaces, if you have a space in the project name, you must either rename and rebuild your project or remove the space from the .tpk filename (by default, the .tpk file is located in /users/<user.name>/gearwatchdesigner/workspace). click 3 enter the author certificate password you registered. click 4 click on the build button tip : package id when you build your project in gws, the package id has to be unique, uses the format xxx.xxx.xxx (where xxx is any alphanumeric character), and cannot contain special characters. if any app is already registered in seller portal with the same package name, you won’t be allowed to register the watch face. you can change the package id from project > build > package id. if your package name is the same as another seller’s registered app, then ‘package id is already used by other seller’ error shows in seller portal when you try to upload your binary file. if the package id is the same as another registered app of yours, then ‘package id is not valid’ error shows. if you see either of these two messages when trying to upload your binary file to seller portal, rename the package id in gws, rebuild your project, and upload the binary file again. tip : choose target api version as of tizen 4.0, it is required by law to notify the user about personal information used in the watch face and how the user can determine whether or not to allow access to personal information during app launch. a device using tizen 4.0 or later must generate a separate .tpk file for this purpose. gws provides an option to generate separate .tpk files for version 3.0 and earlier and version 4.0 or later. when uploading a watch face to seller portal: upload a file with _tw4 postfix for devices using tizen 4.0 or later version. upload a file with _tw3 postfix for devices using tizen 3.0 or earlier version. to support all devices, upload both files. tip : change preview image you can change the preview image seen when you select a watch face in the watch. we recommend one of the following resolutions: 512 x 512px or 360 x 360px at 96 ppi (pixels per inch). file formats supported are .png, .jpg, and .gif. upload to galaxy store when you’re uploading your watch face, you’ll be taken to seller portal. if you are not logged in, you will be redirected to the login page first. when you initially register on the website, you’ll be a free seller, which only lets you upload apps that are listed as free downloads. once you switch to commercial seller, you can upload paid downloads. go to request commercial seller status to find out how to become a commercial seller. note : you can create watch faces with galaxy watch studio or tizen studio for your personal enjoyment. however, you must receive approval from the galaxy watch review team before you can register your watch faces in seller portal and sell them in galaxy store. step 1. upload to the store click 1 click project > uploador click 2 click the upload button. step 2. upload online in seller portal, fill out the necessary information about your watch face and upload it (login is needed). if you are selling apps for republic of korea consumers under korean law, we strongly recommend that you complete explanations of personal information usage in english and korean in the app description field when you edit or register your apps in seller portal. in order for us to provide you with our services, we need your permission to access the items described below. you can still enjoy the basic features of our services without granting optional access permissions. Optimization tips

optimization tips use the following tips to optimize when creating your watch face. also, please refer to watch face format requirements of google play. display and color tips create a watch face as dark as possible. this can vary depending on the design of your watch face, but the darker the watch face, the less power it consumes. this applies to both always-on (ambient) and normal mode. for more information, see color and brightness of a watch face. minimize the frequency of screen updates. components that require frequent screen updates require more rendering, which takes more power. keep in mind that objects that are not displayed by style selection or conditionals do not affect performance because they are not rendered. objects that are not displayed because of tag expressions are partially rendered. do not use extensive masking as this requires a large amount of computation. layout tips optimize the number of components displayed. if multiple components form a single object, merge it beforehand and import it. for more information, see combine bitmap assets. do not include unnecessary components, especially if they are not shown on the watch face. group components with the same purpose. for example, if you want to attach a shadow image to an hour hand, you can group the hour hand image and the shadow image and rotate the group together. make sure fewer than 8 complications are visible in both ambient and normal modes. when complications receive data, the system is kept busy updating what is displayed on the watch face. resource tips do not use unnecessarily high-resolution images. use as small a bitmap as possible. if only a part of a large bitmap is displayed on the screen, crop it as much as possible. for more information, see reduce the size of your bitmap assets. animation tips animations also tax performance. use the webp format rather than gif format. this maintains the same quality but reduces the apk file size. encode your animation file to the size of the screen, with as low a frame rate as possible. any frame rate higher than 15 frames per second drains battery life. for more information, see best practices for animations.

      Gyro effects

gyro effects add movement to your watch face to help your design stand out. gyro effects change the appearance of the watch face as the watch is tilted. gyro effects let you adjust the dimensions, inner pivot positions, rotation, and opacity of objects in your watch face. in the gyro section of the properties tab, adjust the x and y rotation dimensions of independent objects to create 3d effects for your watch face. you can define how the object responds to watch rotation along the x and y axes. figure 1. applying gyro effects rotation axes gyro effects apply as the watch moves within the -90º to 90º range along the x and y axes. the watch is considered level when it is at 0º. you can also design watch faces that change appearance when the watch moves clockwise or counter-clockwise. figure 2. gyro axes when wearing your watch on your left wrist, if your watch rotates 90º upwards (counter-clockwise) along the x axis, this displays as -90º. when the watch rotates 90º downwards (clockwise) along the x axis, this displays as 90º. figure 3. rotation around x axis when wearing your watch on your left wrist, if your watch rotates 90º to the left along the y axis, this displays as -90º. when the watch rotates 90º to the right along the y axis, this displays as 90º. figure 4. rotation around y axis range range values are used to calculate how much the elements rotate. for example, if you enter values of -90 and +90, to create a pivot range of -90º to 90º, then inner_pivot_x is 80 pixels to the right of the base value when the watch rotates 80º. figure 5. defining range values note:gyro effects only work when the two endpoints of the range have the same absolute value. for example, inner_pivot_x cannot have reference points of -90 and 45, but can have reference points of -45 and 45. the following figure illustrates how an element rotates depending on the x and y range values. figure 6. range value examples you can also configure the following additional properties for gyro mode: scale enlarges and shrinks an object in relation to a point at its center. the point remains in the same position while the object gets bigger or smaller. displacement changes the position of an object using a point at its center. the “position” value is based on the center of the object. rotate rotates an object based on a point at its center. rotations do not change the position of the object. figure 7. additional gyro properties: scale, displacement, and rotate note:when you enter an exact value in the gyro input field, it is important to consider how the object’s position and dimension changes. visualize how the object looks when located at -90 or +90, then use this to input a value so that your object reaches the desired end position.
