      New Year, New Portal

happy new year! welcome to 2020 and the year of the rat. today, we're proud to launch a brand new developer portal. this is more than just a facelift. we've listened to your feedback and made content easier to find. we've refreshed our ui with a cleaner, more modern interface that works across desktop and mobile. and best of all, much of the content has been updated. there's dedicated areas for developers and designers (build and design) to help you narrow in on what you want to do. once you're ready to submit, there's a dedicated distribute section to get you on the path to revenue. for those of you who are galaxy store badge users, you can access your dashboard and other promotion services on the galaxy store page. read the blog for the latest tech tips and advice and check out where you can meet us, both live and online, in our events section. as part of this launch, we have also launched new developer forums that utilize the popular discourse open-source software. the new forums support capabilities like a feature request module where you can submit an idea for a new feature for our sdks or tools. you can also show your support by voting for other ideas and provide comments on how it can benefit the developer community. forum participants can also earn badges as they interact and engage with other developers. over the next few months, the existing community forums will initially be marked read-only and then will eventually be sunset. have feedback on any of these new launches? please share your thoughts - what you love, what we can still improve, and what you'd love to see come next.

Stay on Top of the Conversation with RSS

really simple syndication, aka rss has been around for nearly two decades, although many users are not aware of its existence, much less its usefulness. our friends at the samsung internet advocacy team are also big fans of rss. the samsung developers site supports rss feeds and this post is to show you how to access the feeds and to use them to make your life easier. when consuming a site with an rss reader, sites will give the headline and a snippet of the content, while others include the entire content of an item in the feed. both are valid approaches, although many sites use the former in order to bring visitors to their site, where they can monetize the reader. some large media properties have abandoned rss in favor of their own strategies to attract and retain viewers. fyi, there is a similar format called atom, which has many of the same functions as rss. most apps that support rss also support atom, so the advice here still applies. for our sites, we choose to use rss. rss at samsung developers at samsung developers, we are committed to bringing our content to the audience however we can. we're not driven by a monthly page view metric, as media companies are. we want aspiring developers to find our content helpful and then go on to create innovative and helpful apps for our platforms. samsung developers website if you scroll to the bottom of any page on the samsung developers site, you'll see the rss logo in the lower left. it's a circle with two quarter arcs appearing to radiate from the center. if you click the icon, you'll see a bunch of xml text. this text probably won't be terribly interesting to you, but it is to an rss reader application. samsung developers forum the samsung developers forum uses the popular discourse project and is hosted by the company that creates it. discourse built rss support into their platform, so it's simple to add alerts on the content you want to see. for example, to follow the latest topics that are being discussed in the watch face studio category, take the url for the page and append .rss to it. instead of browsing to the page, simply put .rss afterward to get the feed. with that link, you can add the forum topics and summaries to your favorite rss reader, as i've done here for both desktop and mobile. samsung developers forum in browser using rss samsung developers forum on mobile using rss if there's a person on the forums whose advice is always useful, you can follow them in rss as well. ron liechty is our community manager and provides great advice to new developers and those that have been on galaxy store for years. if you wanted to see all of ron's posts as an rss feed, you could simply add activity.rss to his profile page to get this feed. then, you can see his great advice in real time as he delivers it. for what it's worth, these tricks work on all discourse-based sites. as much as we'd like to take credit for it, we can't. samsung developers podcast rss is more than just a news reader format, though. it's also a great way to keep track of new podcast episodes. wherever you get your podcast episodes, just look for the rss logo with the podcast and add the link to your podcast player. this is how many paid podcasts notify their subscribers of new material. in fact, the samsung developers podcast also uses rss to alert their audience to new episodes. if you add a link to your rss reader, you'll be alerted to the next episode (hint: season 3 is coming in early march 2022). if you're a podcast creator, you would use rss to update different hosting services with your content. the samsung podcast platform uses rss to aggregate content from all their contributors, as do most other hosting providers. consuming rss content we've talked about how awesome rss can be, but not how to consume the content. there are rss reader apps on every desktop and mobile platform. most web browsers included rss feeds as a primary feature for many years. firefox and chrome no longer have this function in the core product, but both allow extensions that enable rss viewing in the browser. google themselves create and support a browser extension for chrome that re-enables rss content in the browser. rss is a workhorse behind the scenes of a lot of content on the web, but you can use it directly with only a bit of effort. whether you choose to consume our content directly on our site or using rss, the samsung developers team is here to help you create great experiences for your customers. let us know how we can help by logging into the forums and saying hello. additional resources on the samsung developers site the samsung developers site has many resources for developers looking to build for and integrate with samsung devices and services. stay in touch with the latest news by creating a free account and subscribing to our monthly newsletter. visit the marketing resources page for information on promoting and distributing your apps. finally, follow our social channels on facebook, instagram, twitter, youtube, or linkedin to stay informed of all things related to developing with samsung.

Get Answers on the Go with DiscourseHub

hello everyone! it's a quiet week here at samsung developer central, and many of our developer advocates are enjoying a few days of summer vacation. i typically work behind the scenes, creating features of the samsung developers site and supporting the efforts of everyone else. since nobody is looking, i thought i'd step out from behind the curtain and share a few secrets of our site(s) with you. let's get talking back in january, we made several big changes to our site and the way we work with third-party developers. one of those changes is the forums where we interact with our developer communities. the new samsung developer forums use the popular discourse project, and we're very excited to be working with them. the wonderful thing about discourse is it's built on a modern framework so it looks great on my 32 inch (80cm) monitor, and yet it's completely usable on a mobile phone or tablet. nearly every operation of discourse occurs using an api, so there are many ways to work with the site as a result. on the road again even though they may be on vacation, our developer advocates can still keep up with their favorite user communities using the discoursehub mobile app. you can as well--installation is quick, and setup is relatively painless. once the app is installed, simply click the "add your first site" button and enter https://forum.developer.samsung.com in the search box. when the site appears, click the "connect" button. next, you'll be prompted to log into your samsung account. as with the samsung developers site, the forums use samsung account to authenticate you. after logging in, you'll need to authorize your mobile device to access your samsung developer forums account. once you've logged in and authorized your device, you can browse, view, and respond to forum posts from the comfort of your beach chair. feed me, please like many of you, i'm a gadget enthusiast. cameras, audio gear, things that go fast, and mobile devices to name a few. i read a lot of tech sites and keep up with the latest issues involving site security. i prefer to browse and read all these sites with the same experience rather than jumping from site to site. this is where rss plays a major role in my daily existence. every morning, i spend 20-30 minutes catching up on the news and activities on the sites i manage using one of the popular mobile/web rss readers. discourse built rss support into their platform, so it's simple to add alerts on the content you want to see. for example, if i want to follow all the latest topics that are being discussed in the mobile category, i simply need to take the url for the page and append .rss to it. instead of browsing to https://forum.developer.samsung.com/c/mobile/12, i put https://forum.developer.samsung.com/c/mobile/12.rss into my rss reader, and voila! similarly, if there's a person whose advice is always useful, you can follow them in rss as well. i'll pick on john shih, who is one of our award-winning galaxy theme creators. his handle on the developer forums is x9_studio. to follow his account, i'd go to the activity tab of his profile and append .rss. now, i can see in my rss viewer any time he's giving out great advice. we đź’™ feedback communities are about the people, and we love to hear what our community has to say. do you use discourse for your hobbies or other technical communities? is there some feature you'd like to see? hop into the feature requests section and let me know. there are several upgrades that i'm planning to make to the forums in the next few months, so come back often and check out the progress. thank you for being part of samsung developers. stay safe out there!

Where in the World is Samsung Developers?

thanks to our mobile devices, we have so many ways to keep in touch with our friends and co-workers. unfortunately, many of these apps and services have barriers that prevent us from using them. the samsung developers team is aware that we need to meet our audience of developers wherever they may be, so we're always looking for better ways to communicate. note : serious discussion went into the headline of this story regarding whether to use is or are. we're a rather pedantic bunch when it comes to usage, so to explain--our developer relations organization is called samsung developers so i felt the singular is would be correct. one of our writers said that there are many people making up the organization and most are indeed developers, so are may be more appropriate. further, those of you reading may be developing for samsung platforms, so you too may be a samsung developer. regardless of whether it is is or are, we are glad you are here. the recent turmoil at one of the biggest social networks has affected how companies interact with their audiences. fortunately, we don't rely on any single channel to deliver our message and listen to your needs, so we have many options. however, it doesn't hurt to publicize those channels so everyone knows how to find us. social media social media is the most popular way to reach a large audience, but for two-way communication, these networks lack the tools we need to assess a problem and make sure the right team can handle it. given the breadth of samsung consumer products, over 95% of our dms on social networks could be handled by using the samsung members app or by visiting the samsung electronics support page. as such, we rarely respond to dms on social channels unless it is truly about something for developers. we view social channels as a way to broadcast our message, especially on timely events, but social channels are not a mechanism for us to take feedback. if a developer asks a relevant question on social media, we will guide them to our official support channels and handle the task there. channel account twitter @samsung_dev facebook samsungdev linkedin samsungdevelopers instagram @samsung_dev youtube our team operates the channel at youtube.com/samsungdevelopers. there is a lot of content there from many sources and many years, broken down into playlists. similarly to social media accounts, we prefer to not use youtube as a support channel. however, we occasionally get valuable feedback from the audience and we will have some engagement in the comments. if you watched the premiere of the best of galaxy store awards on youtube earlier this week, you might've seen us interacting with the crowd and giving shout-outs to the winners. we enjoy this real-time experience and hope to incorporate live chat into our future efforts (although, not necessarily through youtube). developer forums we updated our developer forums in 2019 to use the popular discourse open-source system, hosted by discourse. ron, our community manager, is on the forums every work day (and the occasional saturday), making sure your questions are answered and escalating issues back to the appropriate development teams. to post a question on the forums or respond to others, you must first sign up or log in with your samsung account. official support channel if you have a problem with your samsung seller portal account or you suspect a bug in our sdks or apis, there is an official support process. again, you must first log in with your samsung account and then visit the support page at developer.samsung.com/dashboard/support. future channels we want to be here for our developer audience, so we're looking for other ways to interact. our developer evangelists have experimented with using livestreaming tools like twitch to show live coding exercises. these were great during covid, when we were all confined to our homes. we're looking to continue these as the opportunity arises in the future. with the turmoil around social media, several of our team members have started to hang out on mastodon to try to understand the culture there. if it becomes a viable alternative, we'll add our voice. we have a handle reserved, but we haven't started submitting content there. we've been using discord internally the last year as a way to interact with some of our gaming partners. we enjoy the interactions there and think it would be a great resource for office hours. samsung us has it's own official discord, so it's not exactly new territory. we haven't created a public server yet, but that's definitely one of our better options for the future. then, there's reddit. several of us are active contributors there for our personal hobbies, but we're reluctant to use it as an official brand channel. it's a great resource for cat videos and stock tips, but it's not as useful for companies to get their message across. you tell us we want to meet our audience of developers, designers, gamers, and enthusiasts where it makes the most sense. let us know your ideas by posting in the developer forums.

      Update GWS

update galaxy watch studio if a later version of galaxy watch studio (gws) is available, you may be prompted to update gws after you launch it. you can update gws now or manually update it at a later time. to manually update gws, simply download the latest version and run the executable. during installation, the installer will verify that you want to remove the current version installed on your system. you cannot install more than one version of gws on your system. if you added the java path to the gws initialization file (windows) or property list file (macos), after an update, you must add this path to the file again. see step 4 of the galaxy watch studio fails to launch section on the install galaxy watch studio page. updating to galaxy watch studio 1.8.1 in gws 1.8.1, new rules for digital clock language settings have been added. if you have updated to gws 1.8.1 and are using digital clock components, you must re-select supported languages in your digital clock components: back up your existing projects (by default, located in /users/<user.name>/gearwatchdesigner/workspace). in gws, open your project. select the digital watch component. in the properties window, go to the type section and click setting (next to language). unselect then re-select the supported languages and click ok. repeat steps 3-5 for each digital watch component in your project. save your project. repeat steps 2-7 for each project that contains a digital clock component. if you do not update your digital clock components, watch hand components may freeze or text may not display (if these components are used in the same project). galaxy watch studio fails to update if gws displays a window asking if you want to update to a newer version and you launch the update, sometimes the update will not complete (will remain at 0%). you will need to manually install the latest version of gws instead. cancel the download and go to https://developer.samsung.com/galaxy-watch-design/studio/overview.html to install the latest version of gws. common issues after update after an update, when you open an existing project, if text disappears, components cannot be edited, fonts are displayed incorrectly, or something is not working the way it did before the update, clear your system cache by restarting your system. if you shut down your computer, wait a couple of minutes (or the amount of time for the dram to lose its charge as dram may store cache information) before rebooting it. if, after restarting your system, the problem persists, do the following: make a copy of the project with the problem. open the copy in gws and start deleting components until you can identify which component is causing the problem. go to the galaxy watch studio forum and search to see if other developers have reported the same problem. if not, start a new thread in the forum, explaining your problem. if the problem cannot be solved in the forum, submit a support request and include a copy of the project.
