i'm doing fine how about yourself? charlotte allen 00 43 i'm good excellent can i tell you i'm really excited to have the opportunity to interview you today? yeah, this is this should be fun so how long have we known each other maybe a year that's actually a year and a half charlotte allen 00 54 year and a half it seems like longer in some ways tony morelan 00 58 but i think that's a good thing in a good way, charlotte allen 01 01 yes so i'm excited because in the year and a half, we've been working together, you've done so many amazing things and i'm excited for the community to get to know you and to learn about some of the things that you've done yeah so tell us a little bit about tony tony morelan 01 17 sure so before i started working at samsung, my entire career, i was a freelance graphic designer at a nice office at home, i got to work on a lot of nice projects i got to set my own hours i mean, really, it was it was a great gig charlotte allen 01 31 tell me a little bit about some of the cool projects that you worked on as a freelance designer tony morelan 01 37 sure yeah i did a fun project for nokia i didn't animation for the conference okay and they wanted some music to go with it i don't know if you know the song the final countdown yes, yes done by a band called europe, right so they wanted that song and i said, well, you can't just go and take that song i said, however, how about i record knock off version of that song yes charlotte allen 02 02 okay, so musically inclined as well tony morelan 02 05 yeah so you know, back when i was a kid, i thought i was going to be a rock star and okay the band and did that for about 10 years and realized, yes, charlotte allen 02 13 you had your own band yes, tony morelan 02 15 yeah and so when they said, hey, they wanted this song, i said, i can do that for you the next year, they loved it so much they said, come back and do us another one so then they asked me to basically rip off a u2 song and that was a lot of fun i still managed to, you know, plug in my guitar every once in a while, even the music that you're listening to today on this podcast, right? that's my alter ego is the atomic tone? yes so yeah, so i, you know, good opportunity here i still get to, you know, do a little recording have a little fun so yeah, all the music that you're hearing today is from the atomic tone was fortunate to actually get my start right around the same time that the internet was really starting to grow i actually worked on hp’s first website, but i would say, you know, the craziest project that i worked on was i actually designed madonna's first website charlotte allen 03 36 so wait a second so madonna the material girl, yeah, yes, madonna wow, that's pretty cool tony morelan 03 46 yeah, so i was doing some work for sony music the internet was totally new they didn't even have a website for their music division and they were wanting to bring their artists online so i designed a site for madonna, bruce springsteen, ozzy osborne i mean, even britney spears, you know a lot of the big names at the time yeah, so that was a lot of fun charlotte allen 04 05 so the material girl madonna, how was it working with her? tony morelan 04 10 really the only feedback madonna kept giving for the website was make my picture bigger make my picture bigger so we would do rounds and rounds and wrath of the website and madonna's picture kept getting bigger and bigger i charlotte allen 04 21 don't think anybody's going to be surprised by that right? tony morelan 04 23 no, no, no, when i think back that was probably one of the most unique projects that i got to work on charlotte allen 04 29 wow so tell me about your journey tony morelan 04 32 to samsung how i got here yeah, so that that was unique also, i had no intentions of leaving my freelance gig truthfully it was it was amazing however, i came across an amazing opportunity a friend of mine who was also a graphic designer knew about samsung she invited me to attend a workshop here at the campus in mountain view where they were going to teach you about the software called gear watch designer has since been changed to galaxy watch studio the free software that samsung makes available to designers to create interactive watch faces without doing any coding as a designer, that was like all i needed to hear and then when she said that there was free pizza, i thought hacky? no, why not show up for me? that sounds like a great evening charlotte allen 05 17 that's something we have in common yes tony morelan 05 23 interesting enough that was when i first met you because you were the one who was actually putting on this workshop that evening, i went home and actually stayed up all night creating my first watch face you guys were kind enough to actually give me one of the watches so i created this design and i put it on the watch and i sat there and stared at it and thought, oh my gosh, i've just created this like interactive moving animated artwork that's sitting on my wrist and knowing that i could then take that design and upload it to the galaxy store and start selling this, i thought, oh my gosh, what a great gig i thought of it as sort of a fun hobby at the time but i found myself over the next six months, spending more and more time designing watch faces and then eventually becoming approved to design phone ui themes when i learned about that, i just was so excited about this new way to be creative, to actually get my designs out and available seriously around the globe i mean, that first time that i published a watch face, i woke up that morning, and saw that i had a sale from argentina i had a sale in russia, mexico, united states, korea i mean, it was just amazing to see all these sales from around the globe that just got me even more excited charlotte allen 06 46 yeah, that is amazing and i personally have seen some of your designs, which are amazing thank you so i talk a little bit more about your design yeah tony morelan 06 54 so you know, when i started doing the artwork, i wasn't thinking so much like what's going to be the top seller, it was more of this as a creative outlet you know, i'm a huge fan of artists like miro and mondrian and matisse i love cars i love industrial thing so i found myself being inspired by just things that i saw out in the world that could be turned into a watch face so i was grabbing my phone and snapping pictures and, and getting inspired but all these, you know, different unusual objects that i could turn into a watch face charlotte allen 07 24 so is that what inspired my most favorite designs that i've seen of yours? and i remember they're these amazing car wheels and these are jags yeah, tony morelan 07 34 exactly so i was at a stoplight and again, a ferrari pulled up next to me and i see his wheel and i thought, oh my gosh, it's like a perfect watch face so that inspired me to create a watch face that i call to sorrow charlotte allen 07 48 to sorrow yeah, that mean tony morelan 07 50 like that in italian it means treasure, which i thought hey, you know this is a great a great word it was great inspiration for the for the watch that watch face ended up becoming like top seller, what was nice was right around that time, samsung started to take notice of my designs, they wanted to feature that design on a banner on the homepage on the galaxy store it was huge i mean, it was from that design that i really started to see, you know how much money can be made off of doing these watch faces i then realized that i'd love this way too much started asking myself that question, could i go work for a company? could i actually go into the corporate world? i mean, a lot of times people start in the corporate world, and then they go home and they start doing freelance work while i'm doing it reverse, then the question was easy to answer and that was yes you know, i wanted to do this so i made a phone call and that phone call was to who? me? yes it was to i don't know if you remember that phone call? absolutely charlotte allen 08 45 yeah, the phone call you said i want to come and work for you and this is i should say after a number of conversations that we actually had already had, where you are providing some really great feedback to us about the design process areas and we could help you even come to some of our follow up meetings and they are you are already supporting some of the other folks who were also from the workshop and who are in the design process so that was kind of this natural thing that started to happen tony morelan 09 13 yeah, i found myself actually not only teaching the other designers that were invited to come to these meetings, but i was actually teaching the samsung people how to use the software that's when it gave me the confidence like, yes, i could go work for samsung, because i knew i had something that i could offer 09 34 tell us about your role here at samsung tony morelan 09 37 so my title is senior developer evangelist but i often tell people, i'm a teacher and there are different sides to that so one side of being a teacher at samsung is going out into the community so i will speak at conferences, i will conduct workshops, i will teach at universities, lots of different ways to get out into the community and teach how to design and create for samsung here at the office, though i am writing blogs creating youtube tutorial videos, we've now been doing this podcast series we've also launched a webinar series so a lot of different ways where i can help the community but being here in the office, so it is all about assisting designers and developers on creating for samsung charlotte allen 10 21 yeah so you touched a little bit on something that i wanted to ask about a webinar series, which is something that was just launched very recently, where you did just some amazing work, i mean, from building the studio, which is really cool, just doing cool vibe to our webinars to come up with a name, which is wow yes and talk a little bit about, wow, sure everybody wants to know what that means and then also, the recent webinar you did, tony morelan 10 48 yeah, yeah, we launched this new webinar series called wow, which stands for webinars of wisdom and the idea is to not just teach but do it in a very fun sort of quirky way so if you have seen any of the episodes of well, please go check them out, you can find them on youtube, just search samsung developer program and just put in wow and it'll show there the latest webinar that we did was about how to become a themes ui designer, what it takes so you have to submit a portfolio of a mockup of a theme and once it gets reviewed and approved, then you get the ability to download the software and start creating themes charlotte allen 11 26 and so well then led to what we're doing right now yes which is pow, so pow talk about what that means yeah, a little bit about so tony morelan 11 33 pow is podcasts of wisdom i mean, it took me off about two seconds you know, when we were done creating wow, i thought hmm, we have to come up with something for podcasts what could that be? and it was pretty quick it just came up with pow podcasts of wisdom so lots of great plans with that we're actually putting together our schedule already of all the interviews that we're going to be doing so we'll be interviewing some internal people here at samsung they can share a lot about our technologies and processes and how you can be successful using our tools we're also going to be interviewing designers and developers that are already successful with samsung so we've already lined up quite an impressive list of people that i'll be interviewing on pal that can share their journey how did they become a designer or a developer selling for samsung? so super excited about that? charlotte allen 12 20 yeah, i'm super excited about it as well another thing that you've worked on, that i've been really impressed with is you've created some amazing tools to support designers and the cool thing about you, tony, is that you've been on both sides of the fence you've been on this side of the fence as the freelance designer who attended our workshop and now you're on the other side of the fence of knowing the kinds of challenges that designers sometimes face and have come up with some amazing solutions in the way of tools and so if you can share some of those tools that you've put in place, yeah, tony morelan 12 52 for sure the first tool that i created is called the asset creator i noticed that when i was doing watch face design means that i was spending just as much time creating the graphics that are needed on your seller page as i was creating for the watch face, so i needed to find a way to speed up the time that it takes to publish your watch face the asset creators have photoshop template file that automates a lot of what is required when it comes to saving all the different images if you're interested you can go to our website which is developer samsung com actually wrote a blog and even created a youtube tutorial video on how to use the asset creator so you can just search asset creator in the search field and there'll be a link for downloading the asset crater itself charlotte allen 13 34 so asset creator and i think there's a recently yes little that you just created tony morelan 13 39 yeah, so inspired by the asset creator i created some lifestyle photos; the photos are unique pictures of the watch in use so i've taken the watch and i've put it into unique backgrounds so i've you know, placed it on a leather jacket or i've found some tech looking, you know, vent or a pipe or you know, just different lifestyle pictures of these photos and what's unique is that you can just copy paste your watch face into the layer in photoshop, and photoshop will automatically position at depth of field blur, it will do all of the necessary adjustments to the picture so that it is embedded into the scene so it's a huge time saver lots of unique pictures out there so again, you can find the lifestyle photos on our website, going to developer dot samsung comm charlotte allen 14 26 so one of the important things that you said a couple times with both of the tools is, is this time saver? yeah what kind of time are you talking? tony morelan 14 33 so i would say, you know, i would spend half a day creating the assets for your seller page charlotte allen 14 39 absolutely and that's why i wanted you to share is a huge time saver so you've done so much already, in just a year and a half anything we should look forward to tony morelan 14 48 yeah, one of the things i'm most excited about, we're actually doing a partnership with the art institute of dallas so we're going to be conducting an 11-week course for the students there that'll be really exciting we're going to dive really deep into watch face designing and all these students will get an opportunity to publish their designs and make those available to the world so really excited about that and we'll be doing some additional outreach so i know that we're going to go to how design in boston this year so that'll be a ton of fun we're going to set up a booth, we'll have some interaction for people to come in and actually design watch faces on site you know, in the past, we've gone to adobe max, that has been a wonderful experience in we have plans of returning there again in the in 2020 charlotte allen 15 30 yeah, i'm excited about both of those house new to us we haven't been there before, but been planning what we want to do there so it'd be really exciting so hopefully, we might be able to meet some folks there as well yes so what's the biggest challenge with your role here at samsung? tony morelan 15 43 i would say public speaking i mean, i'm a very chatty person, but you know, i have not had much experience getting up on stage really? charlotte allen 15 52 wow, tony, i'm really surprised to hear that i would not have thought and tony morelan 15 55 he must have forgot about that time that i bombed we were hosting about 100 different here at the campus, and i was i was asked to just give a short presentation i mean, maybe 10 minutes, the presentation could not have been easier i mean, all it has to do is talk about myself i just started at samsung, like, two months earlier, i was just going to show a few slides and talk about me as a designer and how i got to samsung well, just before i was going on stage, i was in the back of the room and a developer guy comes up and he starts asking me about all these technical questions about our watch i mean, i didn't know the answers i'm a designer i didn't know how many biometric sensors there were and the specs behind what they did so he turns to me, and he says, i'm surprised samsung hired you so now i'm doubting myself, you know, i mean, was i qualified to do this job and they announced my name to come up on stage so i run up to the stage and i grabbed the clicker to start going through my presentation and i grabbed it upside down i click the button, and i don't realize it but i'm actually going backwards to the presentation that was given before mine, and i don't realize this kind of talking away, and then i turn and i look at the projection screen, and i realized, i'm not even in my presentation so i click the other button, but then i click it too many times and i end up advancing like three slides into my presentation and at this point, i'm just totally lost you know, i'm nervous, and i start to feel this wave of anxiety come over me and i don't know what to think i don't know what to say and i just froze it just froze us looking at the audience and they were looking at me, it honestly, it's the weirdest thing i just could not function someone actually came up onto the stage and grabbed the clicker from me and together we just bulldoze my way through the rest of my presentation i mean, it was fine i mean, looking back at it, i'm sure it wasn't as bad as i made it out to be but you know, what it did tell me was that i needed to get some professional training public speaking so sign up for a few classes you know, here we are a little over a year later in this past year, i actually hosted the samsung developer conference award show so, yeah, that was a lot of fun charlotte allen 18 16 so how can the community find you? are you on social media and want to reach out to you possibly even see some of your work? tony morelan 18 24 sure, sure so when i started doing my workspace design, i'd created a brand name that brand name is axeir so it is a x e i r charlotte allen 18 32 have to ask again, is there a meaning to axeir or tony morelan 18 35 actually no, i wanted a five-letter domain name i can give a little advice is pick a domain name that people don't have to ask you how to spell it unfortunately, with axeir people don't know how to spell that so yeah, that wasn't that wasn't the best choice but you know what, i got the domain name can find me online under axeir on social channels is axeirbuzz so you can find me on twitter and instagram you can find me on linkedin, you know, just search my name is tony morelan happy to connect with you on linkedin and another way that you can reach me is just through our website you know, i'm active on the forums so you can go to our forums and post questions there charlotte allen 19 13 so it's been a blast talking to you today, i've learned some new things i didn't really know how popular you were with all the stars and but it's been great talking with you and working with you and thanks for sitting down and taking some time tony morelan 19 27 thank you outro 19 30 looking to start creating for samsung download the latest tools to code your next app, or software for designing apps without coding it all sell your apps to the world on the samsung galaxy store check out developer samsung com today and start your journey with samsung the pow! podcast is brought to you by the samsung developers program produced by tony morelan with special thanks to charlotte allen and music composed by the atomic tone

docquick-start guide this topic is an introduction to developing web applications for samsung tv it describes how to get started with the samsung tv sdk, the characteristics and structure of tv web applications, some useful apis and features, and ways you can test your applications related info tizen developers api references this topic is intended for developers with experience in creating web applications if you have not developed a tizen web application before, first familiarize yourself with tizen developers to begin application development with the samsung tv sdk set up the development environment install the samsung tv sdk create a certificate profile according to the tizen policy, all applications must be signed with valid certificates before they can be installed or run the signature verifies the source of the application and makes sure it has not been tampered with since its publication importantkeep your certificates backed up in a safe location when you update your published applications, the update must be signed with the same author certificate as the original application if the applications are signed with different author certificates, the update can be recognized as a different application and not an update design your application create a project you can select from various predefined templates implement application features test the application if you have questions about using the sdk, share them in the community forum designing applications when designing a web application for a samsung tv, pay attention to the following application characteristics remote control functionality the remote control is the main way for users to interact with the tv for more information, see user interaction simple ui the tv has a simpler user interface ui than a mobile device you must consider the user experience when designing the ui for more information, see design principles when you develop web applications for smart tv scalable application resolution on samsung tv, the screen aspect ratio is 16 9 for the uhd tv model groups, the standard application resolution is 1920x1080 px, and for the fhd tv model groups, it is 1280x720 px to prevent whitespace and scroll bars from appearing when the application screen is scaled, keep the aspect ratio at 16 9 even when the application resolution is different from the standard common web application features tv web applications can have most of the same features as web applications for other devices you can use web standard functions, such as mouse support, video elements, animations, and visibility change notifications you can also use tizen web device apis and samsung product apis supported by samsung tv for more information, see the api reference implementing application features a tizen web application consists of html, css, and js files, and a "config xml" file all tizen web application projects must have a "config xml" file in the project root directory the configuration file is composed of xml elements, including the <widget> element as its root these elements represent the application information, such as version, features, and privileges available for the application the configuration information is used when you install or run the tizen web application for more information, see configuring web applications you can implement the following features in your application tizen web device api and tv features the following tizen apis are useful for tv service applications tvwindow api you can use tizen web device apis to show the tv screen or external inputs in an application for example, you can implement picture-in-picture pip using the show function of the tvwindow api tizen tvwindow show function {}, null, ['0', '0', '50%', '50%'], 'main' ; for more information, see implementing pip tvaudiocontrol api you can control the volume level or mute status of the tv, using the tvaudiocontrol api tizen tvaudiocontrol setmute true ; tizen tvaudiocontrol setvolume 10 ; samsung product api and vod features the samsung product api provides additional functionalities beyond those offered by the tizen web api, such as retrieving information about the device and platform, displaying subtitles, and playing vods you can implement vod playback in 2 ways using video elements you can use the html5 standard video element for more information, see using video elements using the avplay api vod playback can be implemented using the avplay api, which has additional features, such as support for drm technologies for more information, see using avplay the following remote control keys are needed to control vod playback volume control to control vod playback volume levels, you can use the volume keys of the remote control without registering them, because they are handled at the platform level volume control can also be implemented using the tizen api for more information, see tvaudiocontrol api "play/pause" key the smart control "play/pause" key combines the functions of the "play" and the "pause" keys its keyname is mediaplaypause and the keycode is "10252" vod service applications must handle this key to toggle between play and pause modes screensaver to prevent screen burn, the screensaver is shown after a defined amount of time, if the tv screen has been displaying a still image or if there has been no user input for more information, see setting screensaver viewport scaling if you create an application for resolutions different than the standard resolutions, you can scale the resolution up or down, using the viewport meta element for more information, see managing screen resolution input method editor ime when an input or textarea element is focused, the virtual keyboard is shown the virtual keyboard is automatically hidden when a key on a connected external keyboard is pressed for more information, see keyboard / ime multitasking when the user switches from your application to another application or tv channel, your application must save its current state to ram and enter the hidden state you can receive notifications when an application is shown or hidden by registering a callback for the visibilitychange event document addeventlistener 'visibilitychange', function { if document hidden { } else { } } ; for more information, see multitasking iframe elements you can insert remote pages into your application using the web standard iframe element for more information, see the w3c recommendation for html5 <iframe width='960px' height='540' src='https //www youtube com/embed/7xbt-udahx8'></iframe> notewhen using iframe elements in tv applications, the following limitations apply only the following sandbox attributes are available allow-same-origin, allow-scripts, allow-forms, allow-top-navigation tizen and samsung product apis cannot be used in iframe elements the "frame flattening" feature, supported in tizen mobile web applications, is not supported in tv applications on the emulator, iframe elements for remote sources do not work as expected web storage and tv file system you can store application content and data, such as user information, in web storage and the tv file system for more information, see using web storage and managing file operations notefor your application to be published on samsung apps tv, you must make sure that all user login information is deleted when the application is uninstalled after deleting and reinstalling the application, there must be no user login information available from the previous installation tls support to transmit encrypted information between web browsers and web servers, samsung tv supports tls transport layer security versions 1 0, 1 1, and 1 2 ssl secure sockets layer is not supported testing applications to test your application during development, you can use the tv simulator and emulator tools provided in the samsung tv sdk, or an actual samsung tv tv simulator the tv simulator is a light-weight tool that simulates samsung tv apis using a javascript backend the simulator is useful when quick prototype development is required, such as when developing the ui you can modify the html5, js, and css code, and quickly reload the simulator to view your changes api support on the simulator is limited; the simulator does not support any features that have strict dependencies on tv hardware or core tizen modules some api functions return dummy values tv emulator the tv emulator is a tool that provides an environment similar to a real device if you do not have the real device, you can test on a virtual device with similar features the emulator supports most of the device apis, so it is useful when implementing the features of your application tv device if you have tested your application on the emulator, it is ready for uploading and testing on a tv even though it is possible to complete most application testing on the emulator, it is highly recommended that you also test your application on a target device the emulator and tv environments are very similar, but there are some differences at the hardware level

prasad rayala 00 48 hey, thanks tony for having me i'm a product manager at samsung electronics america i cover knox mobile enrollment and knox managed products and recently i picked up dex as well and in my role i work with our internal teams to enable them with what's new with these products, how they can be offered to customers, and what challenges customers are facing in implementing these solutions on the other side, i work with our r&d teams to enhance these solutions based on feedback we receive from our customers and partners tony morelan 01 28 so how long have you been at samsung for? prasad rayala 01 31 a total of six years three years with samsung america and three years samsung dubai tony morelan 01 38 i didn't realize that she worked in dubai prasad rayala 01 40 yeah, but three years and then i moved to samsung us tony morelan 01 44 did you study tech when you were in college? prasad rayala 01 48 i am an engineer, but i studied civil engineering, how to construct buildings and bridges but i moved to it i started my career with as a programmer on the midrange systems is foreign during the y2k era, i then moved to java programming language and i've been working outsourcing company in india for over a decade while i was with them, i was posted to dubai, to manage the customer relationships there while i was in dubai, i came across an opportunity to join samsung to manage a large scale smart learning project where about 400 classrooms across the country need to be digitized with large displays in the classrooms and also provide devices for students to consume the content that was in 2013 and after completing the project, i moved to the mobility side and the knox was just launched at that time, and i was cast to spread the awareness of narcs work with partners the ecosystem, just take it to the market and i continued in that role for about three years and in 2016, i moved to the us and joined a global knock solution engineering team and since then i've done different roles like solution engineering, partner management, project management, and now product management tony morelan 03 21 you know, i recently did a podcast interview with the knox partner program prasad rayala 03 25 yes, those are excellent yeah i mean, it's a great initiative, how to help partners, build their solutions, get support, and actually work with samsung in promoting those solutions it's a nice platform tony morelan 03 39 see, it mentioned that you eventually made it to the us tell me where are you based out of right now prasad rayala 03 44 i work out of our mountain view office in the bay area we also have the north america or us r&d team also operates from majority of the knox r&d teams, engineering, product managers work out of that office as well tony morelan 04 00 is that where you're at right at this moment, prasad rayala 04 02 as of this moment, i'm in melbourne, australia my family lives here and i came to visit them, middle of march and since then, i'm stuck here because of the border closures on both sides so i continue to work remotely leveraging all the technical capabilities my company provided, including decks, tony morelan 04 24 like i can imagine what that must be like, you know, glad to know that you and your family are safe and that you're able to continue working hopefully soon, the borders will open and you'll be able to come home but i'm just not sure when that's gonna be let's talk a bit more about dex now, what exactly is dex? prasad rayala 04 41 so samsung dex is a software platform that extends your smartphone or tablet into a desktop computing experience it is built into many of the latest samsung smartphones and tablets it's free you don't have to buy anything lily to get started using decks is just a monitor, hdmi adapter and peripherals like keyboard and mouse and with our latest galaxy note 20, you can use decks wirelessly on most of your tvs that support mirror cast the best part is while you are running decks on the monitor, you can continue to use your device at the same time so you're attending a video conference on the biggest screen, but you can also take notes or browse through your emails on your device at the same time tony morelan 05 33 so i know my first experience with decks was a little over a year ago and back then i actually had to stick it into a cradle so you're saying now it's prasad rayala 05 43 it's miracast? yes, you connect your larger display to mirror cast wirelessly when dex was launched with galaxy s eight yes, there were a couple of hardware accessories like cradle was required to plug it in we graduated from their two wireless connectivity now there are certain limitations like how many number of apps you can run while you're connected wirelessly but you have the option of just going into a meeting room connecting to a display wirelessly and running your presentations off your phone tony morelan 06 18 so can you tell me where did the name dex come from? what does that mean? prasad rayala 06 22 yeah, anything ending with x is very catchy, right? but dex is a short version of desktop experience so when you activate it by connecting your phone or tablet or monitor you get the familiar look and feel of a desktop environment with features and functions you're used to like multiple and resizeable, windows, keyboard shortcuts, and drag and drop etc tony morelan 06 51 do users need to install any special apps or using these special api's to enable samsung dex on their devices? prasad rayala 06 58 no, no special application required, it's pre built on the device firmware you don't have to install anything we just need to connect device to a monitor with the cable and dex will launch automatically an it administrator on the other side can control the text experience like allowing or disallowing enabling decks and choosing which applications can run index mode okay, this can be done using their preferred e&m solution tony morelan 07 27 definitely for security that's an important aspect is dex only compatible with android? or is it compatible beyond android os prasad rayala 07 36 so dex can be used in three different variations to meet various needs first, you can use it by connecting your samsung android device to a monitor or you can run it in standalone mode on the tablet screen without connecting to a monitor or you can use your pc or mac by installing an application on the mac or pc and connect your device through usb cable and run dax on your existing laptop or mac but the experience itself is powered by the software in both on samsung smartphones and tablets, tony morelan 08 15 so what applications can i use index mode? prasad rayala 08 18 pretty much any android application that's running on your device can be run in dex mode, all your favorite business applications like microsoft office, mobile suite, adobe apps for creative professionals, video conferencing apps like microsoft teams, webex, zoom bluejeans, etc wow, okay yeah, and if you are relying on legacy windows applications that do not have mobile or web versions, you can use virtual desktop applications like vmware or citrix within dex to access a full windows desktop from your phone and it's not just all work, you can have some fun too you can play your favorite games on a biggest screen and use your keyboard mouse gaming keyboard and mouse to play to control the game experience on a bigger screen tony morelan 09 14 wow, i didn't know that that's, definitely a great advantage yeah so let's talk a bit about developing for deck so if i'm a developer, why should i optimize my app for decks? prasad rayala 09 24 yeah, based on some market research, we found the majority of it workers use two or more devices for work, phone, laptop, tablet, laptop, desktop, etc at least two when multitasking between these devices, productivity is lost due to compatibility between the operating systems and applications samsung dex minimizes this fragmentation by bringing pc like experience to your mobile devices applications optimized for dex can take advantage of android's multi window features where users can open multiple apps in the same session to work, connect, and interact seamlessly together because these applications will be running on a larger screen index mode, you can use additional features like drag and drop files between windows copy paste between multiple applications and navigate between apps with your familiar keyboard shortcuts tony morelan 10 29 you know, we talked a little bit about covid how you're in australia at the moment because of the borders you know, pretty much the country is working from home so can you talk a bit about the benefits of developers optimizing their apps considering that people are now working at home more? prasad rayala 10 45 yeah, i mean, the the obscene shift in many things that we are usually doing say working from home for an hour is different from working from home for six months teaching kids for a couple of hours from home is different from remote learning toward the day so enabling the secure and productive work from home setup is one of the core use cases of tech's imagine you're about to jump onto a video conferencing call with your team on your laptop, and it decides to go through a noise tony morelan 11 21 yes, yes, prasad rayala 11 22 right at that moment, or you get a blue screen you don't have to reschedule your call, you can just connect your phone to the monitor and fire up your decks and join the call you can continue checking your emails, take notes or even collaborate with your team by sharing your screen while you are on the video conferencing kind of launch through decks if you need access to windows native applications, yes, you can fire up video solution like citrix or vmware and if you have an application running in education space to say students will be able to utilize a large screen to access your solution and use the s pen on the tablets to take notes while attending a session tony morelan 12 08 that's great with this whole distance learning, any sort of tools that we can offer to our students to yeah, to help is prasad rayala 12 14 definitely a huge benefit so my son school is using google classroom and they share a lot of material for kids to work on some math worksheets, etc he's been printing them and writing on them and scanning and sharing with their teachers i told him, why don't you use your s pen so now he's converting it into a pdf? he's editing writing on the tablet itself, just saving it locally and sharing with his teachers we're reducing a lot of printing at home and saving some yes, tony morelan 12 52 definitely definitely that's great so what has samsung decks done to drive awareness for developers prasad rayala 13 00 yeah since the launch of deck samson has worked closely with the developer community in enabling business applications to take advantage of the benefits offered by decks every year at samsung developer conference there are dedicated talk tracks and hands on labs were offered a lot of articles and videos around how dex is enabling certain use cases in verticals like public safety, health care, and education these are published on samsung insights portal and there is a dedicated section on the developer website for samsung to help developers start the journey and optimizing their apps for tax tony morelan 13 43 that's excellent any chance that there's some sample code out there for developers who want to take a look at it and understand a little bit more? prasad rayala 13 49 absolutely there are hands on videos on the developer samsung com how to optimize the applications and there is some sample code explaining each optimization they can do these videos are great like, you can just pause them and make changes to our app and there are instructions on how to test your application, how it's running on dex, etc there are a lot of resources on developer samsung com tony morelan 14 18 that's, that's great so we talked a little bit about your experience with knox so let's talk about what has dex done related to security prasad rayala 14 27 so dex doesn't really interfere with security it fully complies with the policies set by administrator through the mmm say you want to attach a picture you took on your phone to your email and if your administrator has blocked access to the usb ports on your laptop, for security reasons how will you send your picture to your email you will either email it to yourself or to a third party cloud store is both are not productive enough not secure enough so with decks, you'll have that seamless access of your local files on your device, which you can just drag and drop these files onto your email client running on your device itself so no more emailing it yourself or uploading to a third party file sharing system you can also leverage your biometrics to set up samsung pass on on your device to access your online accounts without having to type in your password every time on the personal side if you are using the secure folder where you might have installed sensitive applications, like banking or you store sensitive information, you can continue to use it dex won't interfere with secure folder tony morelan 15 49 so i had mentioned earlier that the version of dex that i had was where i put my device into a cradle so i know that dex has evolved so talk a little bit about where dex originated from and but it's become prasad rayala 16 00 yeah then so the mobile devices is not designed to run multiple applications at the same time right so yes, there can be background applications running but user typically interacts with to one application at a time there is no multi window but as dex enables this multi windows feature, the device can heat up pretty quickly so the first version of dex when it was introduced on galaxy s eight, there was a docking accessory called the deck station or a dex pad was required to start the desktop experience and connect to peripherals so these accessory had a little fan inside to keep the device cool and ports to connect your keyboard and mouse and hdmi back your monitor with node nine, the need for these docking accessories really was eliminated by introducing the next hdmi adapter simple cable or a multi port adapter if you need to connect your peripherals in 2019 with the launch of node 10 decks for pc was introduced i talked before where you can install an application on your pc or a mac and access decks right from your computer with no today don't need any wires, any cables, you can just connect your phone to your miracles supported this tvs wirelessly tony morelan 17 29 so you had mentioned a little bit about multi window are there any other specific types of optimizations? that can be done? prasad rayala 17 36 yeah, i think minimum decks optimized application should support multiwindow keyboard mouse inputs and handle runtime configuration changes generally, if an app follows best practices of android programming, it will successfully run index mode without any code changes okay? there are no samsung specific sdk to integrate our api's to call multi window support enables minimizing, maximizing and resizing the application window only the manifest file needs to be updated to support this feature to enable keyboard and mouse support, you just do not explicitly declare touch screen support in your manifest and keep in mind that when an application switches between mobile and dex mode, runtime configurations change, this is similar to an orientation change from portrait to landscape these runtime configuration changes may result in forcing the application to restart when switching between mobile and x mode you don't want a webex session that you joined from phone to restart when you launch decks mode to avoid this, just follow androids guideline on handling configuration changes and best practices for building a responsive design that seems tony morelan 18 51 pretty straightforward what about some new decks features like finger gestures are drag and drop? prasad rayala 18 57 yeah, so drag and drop, copy paste these features have been there, right from the beginning the finger gestures you're mentioning is how you use your device screen as a touchpad when you are in dex mode by connecting your device to the monitor if you do not have a mouse, you can convert your device screen as a touchpad to interact with decks and run just like a traditional touchpad on a laptop a single tap on your phone screen is same as your mouse left click, a double tap is like a right click, you can pinch your fingers to zoom etc tony morelan 19 35 so what types of apps then are developers optimizing for decks? prasad rayala 19 39 so any application used in a workplace setting right? productivity suites, your vdi applications video conferencing, or specific vertical focused applications like say healthcare or education these are all applications that can be optimized any application that can benefit from a desk stop experience running on a larger screen is a candidate for optimization it's not just limited to, again, work apps, you can optimize some of your games as well, if you will, that games can be educational my daughter is learning how to count by twos, threes, fours, she just started her multiplication and there are a lot of lessons out there router gamified and instead of watching those on a seven inch screen or a 10 inch laptop, i'm letting her watch those things on my samsung tv on a larger screen, and she's happy with it tony morelan 20 41 oh, that's that's excellent so let's talk about some of the challenges is a dex had to face any challenges that you can share? prasad rayala 20 48 yeah, so with dax, our goal is to close the gap between desktop and mobile computing experiences it won't happen overnight we need to build an ecosystem around next to support different use cases, we are pretty confident about meeting their mobile workers needs but we know we have some work to do in other verticals we are investing heavily in enhancing the core capabilities of the device itself to support different vertical use cases, along with live raising capabilities of our partners there are some exciting things on the roadmap so watch this space through this year and early next year tony morelan 21 30 excellent so let's talk about some of the areas of success then what can you share that that you're proud of the dex has accomplished prasad rayala 21 37 so we've seen dex adopted in almost all industries, saying healthcare of patient experiences improved to seamless continuity from doctors workstation to patient rooms and back again in retail the associate can use a single device to say browse through inventory, check prizes, or ask assist customers with checkouts all with a single device say in public safety officer can use his mobile phone while in the field or inside the vehicle or at the station, say in a insurance or construction space, you can consolidate your hardware so you have access to everything you need while in the field without having to go back and forth between devices so we we continue to work with our partners and customers now to identify different use cases in retail bank branches there's a nice use case where the bank associate can interact with the customer to a dual screen kind of mode where associate will be accessing, say presenting different loan options or critical options to the customer and the customer will be using a tablet or filling his or her personal information, both sharing the same device so they're nice use cases we are discovering our customers are help improving the product with the use cases they have in the specific vertical businesses tony morelan 23 15 yeah, and i, you know, i can totally see where you know, we're in the middle of this pandemic with covid it's pretty obvious that even when we get beyond this pandemic, i think our society is going to be making a shift towards how we're conducting a lot of our, you know, day to day business so just your example there of how working with bank institutions, and being able to share screens, but yet, stay within your device, i think is very, very advantageous, right so what advice do you have for developers looking to get started modifying their apps for decks, prasad rayala 23 49 so if you have never experienced vertex, you don't know how your application looks and feels on a larger screen just start simple enabled multi window keyboard shortcuts and just connect your device, launch your application and just see the magic these changes do not require any change in your core and just the manifest file, you can just make some changes and run it once you see how it runs on a larger device with resizable, windows and drag and drop, etc, then it'll force you to think outside that seven inch screen your application is designed to run on or you can then go on and explore more and provide unique features like the contextual menu, or using their mouse wheel to zoom in, say you have a map solution in your application you can use your mouse wheel to zoom in and out of the map, etc that's great tony morelan 24 45 so for a developer that wants to get started, what's the best way for them to learn more? is there a website that they can go to? prasad rayala 24 53 yeah, i mean, to understand what specific solutions are best optimized for dex checkouts samsung dex com it gives an overview of the solution itself, how it runs, how to enable it, what device is it run on, etc and while you're there, just go to text for business section to understand how it's used in different verticals you may be operating in a specific industry, it will help understand how dex is enabling use cases in that industry and there are a lot of videos on youtube on just decks both from samsung team and independent analysts users out there who tried decks for different use cases and finally, when you ready to start optimizing your application, go to developer samsung com and go to the deck section and follow the instruction start simple and just start optimizing your app tony morelan 25 49 that's that's great that sounds actually pretty darn pretty darn easy yeah so are there any news or any events coming up that we can get excited about from decks? prasad rayala 25 58 so as much as we wanted to be in front of our customers and partners but we couldn't do so with covid so we are going as much detail as possible have we had a two day virtually experience event in july where industry experts advised how businesses can adjust to the new normal we have also launched a series of online events called samson together, where we host one hour session with our partners to introduce new solutions we are bringing together to help our customers navigate these difficult situations we covered decks in detail in the last episode, very hands on demonstrations and use cases discussed etc so check out samson together this a series of one hour sessions and the last session covered decks in detail tony morelan 26 52 that's great that's great thank you for that and i will be linking to all of this in the show notes for this episode so make it easy for for our listeners to find those pages if people want to contact you or the decks team, what is the best way for them to do that? prasad rayala 27 06 so the instructions www developer samsung com are pretty self explanatory, a lot of videos and sample code, etc but if you still need help or send in a request with your question inside that portal, there is a dedicated team around the clock to help you with your classifications wherever you are in the world, there is a team in your timezone of answering your questions, make use of that contact form on the www developer samsung com tony morelan 27 36 excellent so a couple of last questions for you so the first thing i want to ask is, when you're not working, what do you do for fun? prasad rayala 27 44 so can you really say when you're not working now that you are at home and you're always hooked on to work? there is no there is no distinction between you're at work at home, you're always tony morelan 27 58 okay, so when you're outside and you're under plugged prasad rayala 28 00 so yeah, mostly i spend my time with my family also my work my toolkits keep me busy helping them with these remote learning or just keeping them busy when when they're not learning but if i can still sneak out some time, while mostly be exploring my neighborhood by walking, i love to go on slow, long walks and probably some hikes tony morelan 28 28 so the last question you had mentioned that you were studying as a civil engineer, and then you actually got to spend time in dubai what was that like with the i'm sure you were amazed with all the buildings that you saw there prasad rayala 28 40 to divide goes to the cycles of real estate boom and bust right when it's booming you you could see thousands of these cranes set up they do go vertical, because they need to make use of the limited the space they have they can't spread out so they go vertical in minimum you'll see like 3050 floors and all that so samsung office was on 51st 52nd floor and we could from there the palm jumeirah, clearly it there are a lot of engineering marvels a lot of great architecture there is a twisting and rotating tower so builders are competing to meet new and unique designs of their most challenging work environment, right, the temperatures constantly about 130 140 sometimes, it's very challenging sometimes it's just fun tony morelan 29 40 well, hey, prasad i absolutely appreciate you taking the time to join me on the podcast thank you very much prasad rayala 29 44 thanks, tony thanks for having me outro 29 47 looking to start creating for samsung, download the latest tools to code your next app, or get software for designing apps without coding it all sell your apps to the world on the samsung galaxy store, check out developer samsung com today and start your journey with samsung the pow! podcast is brought to you by the samsung developer program and produced by tony morelan

bala thinagarajan 02 05 i'm with samsung for more than 11 years but it still feels like yesterday i joined samsung as a consultant in 2009 to validate the device management protocol on the samsung phones, and then put those on living we created the device management framework on samsung android devices, which then got adopted in a nice framework and through these years, i've been growing together with the knox team at samsung tony morelan 02 30 and so what was your professional journey that eventually led you to samsung? bala thinagarajan 02 34 well, in 2004, i worked for bbqs as a software engineering their offshore team in india bank is a consumer electronics company, and i was part of the mobile team that's when i got my first exposure to mobile technology and while working for ben q, i got an opportunity from hcl technologies to lead a mobile deployment in australia and i took the job and deployed mobile value-added services for various legacy forms in artisan hutchison network in sydney and then we did a similar deployment in belgium for proximus and after returning from europe, i worked on a project to validate protocol implementation of 3g signaling gateway for alcatel and that's when samsung was looking for someone with good understanding on three gpp standards and protocols and that align well with my background and they hired me as a consultant in 2009 tony morelan 03 30 wow so you really had quite a journey going all the way from your native country of india through europe, and now here to the states bala thinagarajan 03 37 yeah, it's an amazing journey and that's what happens when you work in technology always keep your bags ready tony morelan 03 45 of course, yeah as i had mentioned, last year, we did an interview with morgan where we talked about the next partner program, but for those that aren't really familiar, can you can you explain what exactly is nox in when did it become a part of the samsung bala thinagarajan 03 59 be introduced nox in 2013 to make android more secure on samsung devices because back in the days, when google introduced android, for initial few years, the main goal was to increase androids consumer market share, and android was not ready for business adoption so samsung, being the largest manufacturer of android phones saw this as an opportunity and created knox to meet the needs of our customers so just to put things in perspective, marks is a brand name that represents security platform, and advanced security features like that are required for enterprise and also the cloud services that helps deploy and manage devices tony morelan 04 42 so i'd like it if you could elaborate a bit more on knox security is this only available for enterprise customers or is it also available for consumers of samsung phones? bala thinagarajan 04 51 great question, ma so the mac security platform is the foundation of security that's pre-built on all samsung devices the security platform on the device, you know, runs and scans for security in real time, which means the security is turned on by default so when a consumer gets a samsung phone, they're already getting the most secure phone on the market today nice on top of the security foundation, we also built mass platform for enterprise, which includes a toolkit and resources, using which enterprise can unlock advanced features to transform a regular consumer device to a business device tony morelan 05 28 can you talk about the advanced features supported by knox platform for enterprise? bala thinagarajan 05 33 so android enterprise meets the most common set of requirements any customer like want to use android enterprise, they will meet like most of their common requirements using a ui but customers and regulated industry has more stringent security requirements that cannot be met by android enterprise and that's where knox comes into picture marks can be used as an extension to android enterprise and the advanced features that are created with the marks are created with an objective to make the device more secure, productive and manageable with some examples be for example, to access classified information using forms, government agencies must use a form that supports two layers of encryption and samsung is the only oem that meets this requirement using mac's door and vpn chaining and also there are many other features to help increase productivity for example, using marks customers can remap hardware key to launch a business app this is a very helpful feature for frontline workers, they can just press the site key to quickly launch a business app and this business app could be either a push to dock application or a barcode scanning application okay, so these are very few examples there are hundreds of features in marks that can be leveraged by customers and developers when building an enterprise solution tony morelan 06 50 for developers focusing on enterprise solutions, what tools are available to build these enterprise solutions, bala thinagarajan 06 56 developers can leverage knox sdk to access all the box functionalities and depending upon what solution they develop, they might be able to leverage a subset of knox functionalities, for example, mobile threat defense solution, developers can access knox api's to get access to hundreds of data points, using which they will be able to detect and also remedy threats what would be some examples of these data points? sure, they can find what applications are running on the device and what resources are accessed by the app and in case they want to find the network conditions or connection quality, they can also leverage the moxie api to find that if there is an abnormal memory utilization, they can also detect that and if the if a particular application is trying to access a file system, and if read write permission is granted to that app, that information can also be found using the knox api's tony morelan 07 50 okay, okay so i was earlier i was reading about knox machine learning model protection can you explain a little bit more about what that is? bala thinagarajan 07 58 sure so we recently introduced this a kox 3 7 dot one, which was introduced in march 2021 if you see, in the reason days, businesses are adopting a technology to increase the productivity in a rapid pace, and more and more businesses are leaning into this technology so machine learning data is the brain of ai technology so when they develop an app to include artificial intelligence, they also develop machine learning data model and this machine learning data model can be either stored on the cloud, or on the device when you store it on the device, you're completely eliminating the latency issue and more and more businesses are preferring to store the machine learning data model on the device but there is one problem when you store it on the device it could, you know, because you're going to store that on the plaintext and that could potentially cause a data leak in order to solve the problem massimo offers a neural model encryption framework, using which customers can easily deploy their machine learning model on the mobile device in addition to modern production, marx also offers application access control so using which you can ensure only approved application can access the data model tony morelan 09 15 okay okay bala thinagarajan 09 16 so what are some other important features that are available for developers, there are n number of options like that are available and kox, i'm going to just highlight three more things so developers can also access universal credential management api said using which they'll be able to configure, provision and consume credentials and they can also take a look at network platform analytics this will help them identify or inspect the ohs behavior, and also inspect the network patterns this is only available on a samsung device okay and the last thing i would like to highlight is about advanced customization capability we have hundreds of customization api, using which you will be able to customize the device the way you want got it? do you have any examples of some unique customization capabilities that have only been available on samsung devices? absolutely, as i mentioned, there are hundreds of customization api's and for example, if you're building a solution to transform a samsung tablet to an infotainment system in a taxi developer can leverage mark cpa to auto power on device when the car ignition is turned on, and power off when the ignition is turned off so if a driver is going to get out of the car, he doesn’t have to go to the backseat to turn the mobile device manually off to save the battery he can just call the mock cpa tony morelan 10 36 wow, that's crazy to think that the taxi can turn off their car and that's when the device powers down but yet when they turn on the ignition, the device actually turns back on exactly bala thinagarajan 10 47 yeah, it's a great question and like a lot, a lot of our solution developers are leveraging this api so what would be some other examples for solutions? similarly, to use a device as an implied data, diamond system, sending the audio output through device speaker is not desirable, tony morelan 11 04 of course, because i can see your if you're sitting next to an annoying passenger, making loud sounds out of the device yeah, that's not going to be nice bala thinagarajan 11 10 exactly so turn off device speaker and only allow audio output through headphones so when the headphones are connected, the sound is transmitted and in case, the headphones off, the sounds are shut off tony morelan 11 22 so they don't even have the ability to control whether the audio is on or off bala thinagarajan 11 25 exactly it's pre-configured and users cannot change that's great yeah and also, they can leverage few other features such as changing the branding, like in case, you know, if you want to chain the samsung device logo during boot time, and use your own corporate image that is also possible that you'll be able to allow you to do that tony morelan 11 42 oh, nice it's really allows for some great customization yep so is there a fee to use the knox sdk toolkit in license bala thinagarajan 11 50 so as of today, the kox premium capabilities require a paid license key but the good news is, we are changing the current pricing policy so starting july 1 2021 customers and partners can get kox platform for enterprise key for free at no cost free wow and this free key will give access to all the kox capabilities except for dual door ucm tony morelan 12 15 can you talk a bit about cloud services and what are the benefits for cloud services? bala thinagarajan 12 20 knox cloud services offers everything that's needed for an enterprise to deploy and manage devices we have deployment tools such as knox mobile enrollment, which will help you to automate your device enrollment process and knox manager is an enterprise mobility management tool, using which you'll be able to deploy and control the device policies remotely and we have knox e 41, which is an operating system management tool, using which you'll be able to schedule software updates onto the device so samsung normally releases monthly patches and quarterly releases, instead of like getting unexpected software updates now key one would although the it administrator to manage the software updates, tony morelan 13 05 definitely a much smoother process for updating the devices exactly bala thinagarajan 13 09 all these services are bundled in one product called mark suite so if customers are going to buy mac suite, they will get access to knox mobile enrollment marks manage and not equal to one and also a kip license key tony morelan 13 23 so customers only need to get one product for all of these services bala thinagarajan 13 26 that's correct just knock sweet that's good enough great tony morelan 13 29 so let's talk about knox configure can you tell me what are some of the benefits? bala thinagarajan 13 34 yep knox configured is also a cloud service, which will allow you to configure the device the way you want like for example, we talked about a lot of customization capabilities and kox, configure will provide you that service into him you don't have to develop your own app but kox, configure will do the job for you if your business doesn't really require ongoing device management, and if you want to use the device as a single purpose device, then you can leverage knox configure so would this be like something you would see like at a shopping center where you have a kiosk? and there's a device there? is that what you're referring to? exactly so if your use cases, business to business to consumer, and then you can leverage knox configure, and it has hundreds of functionalities, which will allow you to configure the device as a single purpose device tony morelan 14 20 okay, great so what's the best way for developers to access these resources bala thinagarajan 14 25 so the best place to start is go and sign up as a partner, the samsung knox saw partner portal once when you sign up as a partner, you'll get access to all the development tools, you'll get access to mark's sdk and also the sample course if you want to start development, you can refer to a sample course and you will get access to development and commercial licenses and direct support to continue our development from our developer forum and in case if you get stuck during your development, you can also leverage our ticketing support system and post tickets and get response and also partners appeared in the must partner program tony morelan 15 02 can you share the url for the partner portal? bala thinagarajan 15 05 the url to access the partner portal is partner samsungknox com tony morelan 15 11 so tell me what is the goal of the knox partner program? bala thinagarajan 15 15 the main goal of samsung knox partner program is to support partners to create better solutions to address the needs of our customers and also like support sales and marketing activities to increase the overall sales volumes that's the main goal tony morelan 15 29 can you tell me if there's a fee to join the knox partner program? bala thinagarajan 15 33 no, there is no charge to join marks partner program all you need is you know, you need to be a registered business with a duns number and sign up using your corporate email address that's all tony morelan 15 45 so the duns number you're talking about dun and bradstreet, correct? bala thinagarajan 15 49 that's correct yep tony morelan 15 49 so i know that there are different tiers to the knox partner program can you tell me what are the benefits for each tier? absolutely bala thinagarajan 15 57 so the basic tier like within the knox partner program is bronze, which includes access to development tools, development and commercial license, and access to online developer forum, ticketing system, and access to market resources all those information’s are available in the box partner program and when they upgrade from bronze to silver, they get all the benefits of bronze but in addition to that they get direct relationship with a partner manager in your region and you will be eligible to participate in the knox validated program and also you will get a partner program to logo okay in addition to that, you'll also be eligible to get internal promotions to samsung teams and co-marketing opportunities and when you move from silver to gold, you'll get all the benefits that i mentioned and silver in addition to that promotion on samsung online properties in samsung knox calm and access to latest devices for testing in case if there is a new samsung device, you can get it from our loaner program nice and you'll also be eligible for invitations to samsung global events on the topmost here is our platinum so for platinum tier partners, they'll get all the benefits of gold plus preferential license pricing, dedicated global account manager one to one execute or sponsor and eligibility for event sponsorship funding tony morelan 17 21 so earlier in the interview, you had mentioned tactical edition can you tell me what exactly is tactical addition? and what is the target audience? bala thinagarajan 17 29 yeah so we create a tactical addition, specifically to address the needs of department of defense sure, for example, the department of defense personnel can be anywhere in the world on a mission they could be in the middle of ocean are they're in a desert so regardless of where they are access to situational awareness information is very critical they should know where they are, and what's happening around them course that's very important so back in the days for situational awareness, you might have seen in some hollywood movies, people might be using toughbook tony morelan 18 01 yeah, those giant like case almost for their device bala thinagarajan 18 06 sure, exactly and they use a toughbook they connect that to a tactical radio through a wired connection and they will be communicating with their command center on the toughbook, they will see the map data, what's happening around the world exactly they are all that information can be accessed now, the main goal of tactical edition was to replace the 20-pound toughbook with a few 100 grams of samsung smartphone that's the main goal sure, and how we are able to achieve that as we work with department of defense, we understood the requirement and we enable special drivers and protocols on the device and made the device interoperable with tactical radio, okay, so that the device can communicate and receive the data from the tactical radio and provide that information in the graphical user interface on the mobile phone so that's what we did on tactical edition so just to simplify, tactical edition is nothing but a military smartphone tony morelan 19 02 so when you're not working with developers on knox, what is it that you do for fun? bala thinagarajan 19 06 i'm an outdoor person, and i like to hike so there are hundreds of trials here in the bay area if someone want to find me during weekend, probably they will find me on all those trails tony morelan 19 16 nice i do a ton of hiking as well and i've hiked many of the hills on your side of the bay one of these days, you got to come over to my side of the bay now and head up towards mount diablo that's where i do most of my hiking now yeah, bala thinagarajan 19 28 that's one of the blessing like to live in the bay area tony morelan 19 30 yeah, lots of wonderful, outdoor and then also we have the opportunity to hopefully get indoors soon and get back into the office it'll be nice exactly hey, bala, thank you very much for joining me on the podcast today it was great to chat with you and get to learn much more about knox and its capabilities thank you, tony closing 19 48 looking to start creating for samsung download the latest tools to code your next app, or get software for designing apps without coding at all sell your apps to the world on the samsung galaxy store, checkout developer samsung com today and start your journey with samsung the pow! podcast is brought to you by the samsung developer program and produced by tony morelan

morgan parker 00 44 yeah, so i'm lucky enough to live in vancouver bc so beautiful outdoors and really have picked up more hobbies than i have time so who i am is someone who is always running around doing different sports and staying outside nice cover is a beautiful place it's on my short list of places to visit once the lockdown is removed, i will definitely be up there soon yeah, once tony morelan 01 07 they opened up the borders exactly so you are the program manager for the knox partner program morgan parker 01 14 so what exactly is knox so samsung knox is a security platform that's, that's really built into all samsung smartphones and other devices as well as wearables and tablets and what it does is really secures the device from you know, boot up, you know, and during runtime to ensure that the data is stored and secured in the most secure way there's also a suite of solutions built upon the knox platform, you know, enabling, you know businesses and other secure organizations to, you know, ensure the devices running and operating in a way that meets their needs, you know, the most secure needs as in government and financial and other really highly secure industries and as well, you know, we as the samsung knox partner program provide a bunch of different sdks and development tools to build on top of that knox platform as well so, you know, we extend that functionality to our partners to build, you know, kind of those next grade solutions and really, you know, provide tailored solutions to our customers as well tony morelan 02 13 excellent so what exactly morgan parker 02 14 do you do? hmm so we, we break down the program really into for different areas so we provide a bunch of resources that, you know, our developers and partners can come in and really discover and learn what we do as a program you know, what we offer is the samsung knox partner program and, you know, the different tools we offer to build upon samsung knox and the other technologies we provide, and then, you know, moving from that, you know, it's really the sdks and support and, and other development resources, so people can get started building and then really facilitating, you know, better go to market activities to, you know, get more exposure to these solutions and then also further from that, you know, the growth phase which is really building a deeper connection in relationship with samsung so, what i focus on is really providing more resources under each one of these kinds of four categories so right now, that's really been more focused on, you know, increasing, go to market resources and activities for our partners and really, you know, working to build out the benefits we provide to our partners and looking internally to see what else we can provide and extend to our partners from kind of each one of those segments as well so really focused on building out a really rich program for our partners that delivers a lot of real-world value tony morelan 03 29 yeah, that's great you know, my role as a developer evangelist for the samsung developer program, you know, kind of falls in line a bunch of what you're doing as far as trying to help a lot of developers with different tools so that they can be successful creating for samsung so i think a lot of our responsibilities kind of intertwine absolutely, morgan parker 03 47 yeah and as samsung as well, i think like we're so big, and i think it can be pretty easy for us to extend you know, some things that are kind of like small exposure things from our channels, but some of our partners are very you know, big opportunities so i think looking for more of these things where, you know, they're the channels there, and everything's ready and extending that further to our partners is, is a big win for us and our partners tony morelan 04 14 so i understand that that you actually had an opportunity to go work for a year in korea at our headquarters i did tell me a little bit about that and how exactly did you end up in this role at samsung? morgan parker 04 26 yeah, that was an interesting one so i've been at samsung now for almost six years and this was about after my fourth year so i was on a business trip actually in california and i got a phone call, you know, stepped out into the hall to take the phone call and it was my boss then at the time, who said morgan, i've got a job that i want you to go and do by the way, it's in korea, and also, i need to know right now so without being able to think of a reason, you know, not to go you know, i committed to it and essentially, it was two months later, and i wasn't real you know, fantastic experience, i think it was really good as probably the first time i felt truly out of my element and maybe probably the first time i felt truly stupid in a while where, you know, you look around, you can't read anything and, and it's, you know, you can get yourself pretty lost but overall really great experience, i think learning how the company operates from, you know, an hq level in korea, and working with a lot of really, you know, talented, intelligent people was really fantastic and enabled me to, to kind of figure out how to make a bunch more things work when i'm back home and venture tony morelan 05 34 you know, i actually had an opportunity to spend a week in korea at hq and one of my fondest memories was getting on the subway there and not having any idea what my exit was because i just couldn't read the language and by the time i realized what my exit was, we had missed it and i looked at the map and saw that it truly is just a big circle the route oh, yeah, i thought you know what, what a great way see, seoul, korea so i just stayed on it for an hour and just got to see all the sights and to loop back around to my exit so morgan parker 06 08 oh, yeah, some of the infrastructure there is pretty fast yeah, exactly and still miss the food it can't get quite as tony morelan 06 13 good absolutely, yeah i love that in cycling too i'm a big cyclist so when i was there, i rented a bike and just took off for the day and just rode along the river it was absolutely beautiful country definitely so can we talk a little bit about the samsung enterprise alliance program? because i understand that was originally in place before the knox partner program, correct? yeah, it morgan parker 06 36 was so yeah, the samsung enterprise alliance program was i think it was up and running for, you know, about five or six years before we transitioned that into the notch partner program you know, the, the program was great i think the difference in why we wanted to transition is to really have another go to build out the program to you know, take all the great things that were in the samsung enterprise alliance program, roll them into this new program but also, you know, expand our focus not just on the enterprise, which, you know, obviously was in the name of that something enterprise alliance program, but look at other ways in which, you know, samsung knox, you know, it's really applicable to, to more than just, you know, the enterprise segment, i think, you know, smbs is a great play i think there's a lot of, you know, b2b to see examples that are really good you know, even looking at some, some b2c examples, potentially, and other ways that knox can be used in that in a great way and i think, you know, by changing the name, you know, and really trying to push the what we're doing with knox platform forward, and how are, you know, offering some of these development tools to our partners and developers, you know, we just get to really, you know, move ahead and build these things out to use these in a different way tony morelan 07 48 so what are some of the development tools that you're offering to partners? morgan parker 07 52 yeah, so we offer a few different developer tools and resources so the first being the samsung knox sdk is a collection of, you know, a few hundred unique samsung api's that really give our partners and developers the ability to have more granular control over the device mostly based in security, authentication, and device and app management so those are typically used by a lot of our utm and mdm partners you know, the next is knox so it's a way that our partners can have a little bit more control over the air firmware updates and how those are handled on the device there's also knock service plugin which enables our developers to really save you know, ongoing development costs and time by integrating with the knock service plugin to have more automatic updates amongst other benefits right so when there's a new knox feature released, the use of the knock service plugin helps the you know solution kind of update to the latest knox you know, version and solution that is available and the last one, knox mobile enrollment so this really helps our partners figure out how to enroll thousands have devices at once easier, and really controlling how those devices are, you know, enrolled and rolled out into an enterprise environment so that's a, you know, very, very high-level view, but encourage people to go to www developer samsungknox com to go dig deeper into those tools and see, you know, how they may fit in with, you know, what is desired for the partner developer solutions being created? tony morelan 09 21 that's great that's great, you know, because i know one of the biggest challenges when developers are creating their solutions are staying on top of the latest devices so you know, you put all this effort into making compatible with a specific device, but then when there's a new release or a new update, you've got to you know, start right back into it so exactly great to hear that you guys are making that a little easier that's morgan parker 09 40 that's the goal, right? yes tony morelan 09 43 yes, what would you say is the primary goal then of the knox partner program, morgan parker 09 47 really is to increase the success of our partners so what i really look to do is just find ways in which, you know, we can provide those resources, additional resources to our partners to help them make more sales you know, when our partners are successful, we're successful and so i think looking for ways to increase the successful partners is really what we're trying to do tony morelan 10 07 charge a fee to join the partner program nope, everything's totally free morgan parker 10 11 and there's a lot of really great, you know, free resources in there as well, including, you know, one of the biggest ones is really technical support as well so, you know, anyone who comes in and joins the program starts building, they can actually put in support tickets and get help when they're when they're building their app, so they don't get tony morelan 10 27 stuck what would be some of the other ways that the knox partner program is supporting partners? morgan parker 10 32 yes so i think, you know, while they're building, as i mentioned, the support is very important our documentation is fantastic you know, there's support forums that, you know, obviously, you get peer, you know, feedback and support through that, but also those are monitored by our support professionals as well so really, while you're building, you know, we do everything we can to help support you you know, moving from that, you know, when you're going to market the program is really designed that when you start to have some in market success, and you're actually serious about going in selling and creating a business with this, you know, we take notice so the, you know, we can see whose kind of activating licenses and who's making some sales so we have really good regional contacts and people that work with the program around the world so we work to, you know, once you start having some success really start working with you and this is where we really can build our relationship and start to promote you even further where, you know, once you get some notice, you know, we can promote you on our different websites there's a solution catalog on www samsungknox com as well as starting promoting solutions internally to our sales teams as well so, you know, once you kind of build some momentum, we work to help you, you know, increase that momentum and get more exposure and conquer, you know, make more sales is really the goal is tony morelan 11 43 this where the different tiers start to come into play, because i understand that you do offer i think it's four different tiers morgan parker 11 49 exactly yeah so everyone joins that, what would be a bronze tier, and really that is you get all the development resources and you can come in and start building and doing what you need to do to get your app off the ground, when you start making some sales and you know, started getting some notice, that's where, you know, we as the program would bump you up to what would be a silver tier partner, put you in contact with regional contacts and start you on that journey from there, you know, as you start to, you know, get in more and more sales, you know, we bumped you up to gold, and then platinum, those right now are pretty large partners, platinum partners right now are no blackberry and sony so at that level, you know, that is just more, you know, obviously, like joint pr and doing events together and that type of thing so yeah, we just really want to, you know, create more silver and then create more gold and hopefully create more platinum partners as well to really start growing our ecosystem so then what is it that you're doing for the small and medium sized businesses? yeah, that's why i think it's really the promotional, and connections with samsung that are really important so that's where the solution catalog comes in where, you know, we start to, you know, do things to jointly promote the solutions to you know, our base of customers and potential customers so i think, you know, doing that and having the relationship with samsung to pull you into more deals at that phase, i think is a really good and important, some really important benefits tony morelan 13 13 sure so giving a lot of visibility then exactly, morgan parker 13 16 yeah and that that comes back into, you know, with our global scale, i think this is one of the best ways that we can we can do this is, you know, providing more visibility from a very large customer base to our partner solutions tony morelan 13 30 so, tell me a little bit about the knox validated program morgan parker 13 33 yes, we just launched that this year so the nox validated program is for our partners and really what it does is it validates the implementation of a couple of our samsung knox products essentially so with that, you know, having no these rich implementations of samsung knox, we do a check to see how those are implemented make sure that you know both from a technical and security perspective, as well as some degree of you know, user friendliness, that these things are done in, you know, a really good way to then give our customers confidence that if they're buying these solutions that, you know, these things are implemented in kind of the best way possible so really designed to give our customers more confidence of these partner solutions, and to, you know, give our partners that, you know, go through this validation process, you know, even more promotional opportunities to promote those solutions further, as you know, kind of our chosen top, you know, validated solutions so, can you give some examples of these additional resources? yeah, absolutely so, first of all, it's really collecting all the existing sales and marketing resources that we do provide, whether that be you know, device imagery, and a lot of the latest device imagery, you know, then other sales and marketing collateral as well so, you know, our partners get to see you know, what we use and how we sell some of those solutions to our customers and get a better understanding of what those are and those can also be reused with, you know, their customers as well to show you know, what is the knox platform and if you're putting all this effort into integrating with the knowledge platform, you obviously would be good to have an understanding of what that is, and then convey that to your customer as well so those are a couple of, you know, kind of key areas of the sales and marketing resources and there's a bunch more in there as well and then really, as i mentioned before, really pushing ahead, and, you know, even doing the active promotion of those solutions, so, you know, getting in front of the obviously more customers, as well as our internal sales teams and other internal business units as well tony morelan 15 29 it sounds great now, you had mentioned the acronym utm in, for those who might not be aware of that, can you write exactly what are those acronyms? morgan parker 15 38 yeah, so i guess in the world of mobile device management, which is mdm, people can classify their solutions in a different way so ucm is unified endpoint management, enterprise mobility management cmm so they're all you know, basically a different way of managing mobile devices or endpoints and i think, you know, depending on guess who you are, you may classify your solution as a different way uvm could be the latest, as you know, endpoints can be more than just mobile devices it can be, you know, other type of smart devices or dongles or whatever so yeah, i think how you classify your solution and what you manage, you can name it something different tony morelan 16 18 so what is the next partner program done to drive awareness? morgan parker 16 22 yeah, i think the biggest one, and we'd work pretty hard to just get our solution catalog launched on www samsungknox com which is what i've mentioned before, so that is taking our silver and above partners, you know, getting what we call a solution brief or a solution profile off them and then putting together a full catalog of the solutions to promote to our customers and anyone coming to that website, essentially, you know, we also work hard to promote a lot of solutions more internally as well so we have some features coming later this month that will really help you know, promote a lot of these solutions more internally again, taking that solution brief solutions profile and working to support are no sales and technical sales teams so if they're working with a customer, and they identify a need that a partner solution they fit, we give them the catalog that they can go and search to find the partner solution that, you know they're looking for to fit that customer needs so, really working to promote that solution sale so, you know, i think a lot of times it's, you know, samsung knox and samsung devices plus partner solution or partner solutions, equals like that full solution that our customers are looking for tony morelan 17 32 you know, right now our society is going through a big transition, dealing with covid-19 can you talk a little bit about some of the challenges the that your team is facing? morgan parker 17 44 right, yeah, this is a, you know, as i mentioned, you know, trying to put together a lot of new features and things for our partners you know, we still have a lot of development on the program that that we're doing i'd actually say where we're probably more in still the growth phase, you know, coming out of something enterprises lines programs still, you know, pretty freshly transitioning before, you know, covid-19 happens so, you know, it's challenging with, you know, keeping our development timelines and still adding lots of new features quickly so, you know, we've had some, some delays with that, i think, you know, i'd like to see a lot of richer features in the program that we've had to wait a little bit more forward but yeah, i think, you know, just really keeping our heads down working more as a team globally to still get these features in the program as soon as possible excellent tony morelan 18 27 that's great to hear so, can you tell me what are some of the success areas for the next partner morgan parker 18 32 program? yeah, we, i mean, even as you know, the covid pieces, one example i mean, you know, having partners come in and use our development tools and new and innovative ways to, you know, solve for real world problems, whether it be social distancing, or, you know, contact tracing and that type of thing you know, there's some great uses of our tools for that, you know, other you know, large partners, you know, doing really great implementations and you know, again are the demand for the knowledge validated programming, how many partners we've had past that, so far has been really good to see as well and i think for what i look at successes, as, you know, people coming in and really using those development tools to make something great that, you know, has success in the real world so there's the opera world need for these things and that happens quite frequently so, you know, there's, there's lots of those successes and i would say, you know, a good way to see a lot of them is go to www samsungknox com and check out that solution catalog and see those solutions and see other success cases on there as well tony morelan 19 31 are there any companies or solutions that you can talk about that are built on knox? morgan parker 19 36 yeah, so, you know, i think, you know, starting with our platinum partners is blackberry and sony, you know, really full rich implementations of samsung knox really, you know, giving those customers using those solutions and samsung devices, extremely rich way to manage those devices and tailor them for you know, different business needs so i think starting with those guys is the probably the reason just implementations of a lot of them, you know, samsung knox sdks and those api's they use that's great tony morelan 20 08 any upcoming news? any webinars or events that you guys are participating in? morgan parker 20 13 yeah, i think i mean, you mentioned how covid slowed a lot of this stuff down so obviously, you know, not as many physical events this year but we do have lots of webinars that we run typically we do at least a monthly webinar, covering, you know, other more technical topics, or you know, how to work with samsung so those are actually posted on the blog at its developer, samsung knox comm so yeah, keep on checking there, and we have events going all the time online tony morelan 20 40 so what advice would you have for companies looking to morgan parker 20 43 join the next partner program, but really just come in and join? i think, you know, it's a very easy thing to come and join to sign your company up you know, come poke around and see, you know, what we have and you know, how we can start working together and really just don't get started you know as it's free and registration only takes probably about 1015 minutes yeah, just come and join and come see how we can work together tony morelan 21 09 so now are there any requirements that must be met in order for a company to be eligible to join the partner program? morgan parker 21 15 we just asked that the partners register with no corporate email address and their corporate details so other than that, there's no real strict requirements it's just we asked for it to be a company and we do a quick duns check for the you know, company registration that's actually it's nice to hear that you've tony morelan 21 33 made this so available to companies to get started to create opportunity morgan parker 21 37 absolutely yeah low barrier to entry is really the way that we wanted to make it so you know, people can again come in and check things out and see what we have to offer and tony morelan 21 47 just get started quickly and again, that website is www partner samsung knox com exactly morgan parker 21 53 and there's the you can go straight to the development tools that guide www developer samsung knox com as well so we've made that quicker for the more technical audience to really get started tony morelan 22 03 okay? are you guys active on any social channels like youtube or twitter? morgan parker 22 07 we do work with our, you know, developer teams as well so you're yourself and we actually have a little sub channel on your youtube channel, where we post all of our more technical webinars and everything they're so tony morelan 22 20 excellent, a great way for people to, you know, get online and check out some more of what you guys are doing so, absolutely, yeah happy to be a part of that yeah, it's really great to work together morgan parker 22 28 yeah, i think yeah, you know, one of the things that is really top of my mind is, you know, how we work together as one samsung, right, i think, you know, coming across to our audiences is not really fragmented, even though we're, you know, quite a large global organization it's really important so, you know, keeping working together with yourself and your team and other teams globally to make sure that, you know, we're working to, you know, come across as one unified front tony morelan 22 52 yeah and i think also one thing that we push how accessible we are exactly, you know, i mean, it's obvious that you guys are very accessible with the program being free and how easy it is to get started i know from our side that we're extremely accessible i mean, i'm constantly, you know, reaching out to people when they're posting questions, whether it's on youtube, or they're contacting me, you know, directly, whether it's linkedin or twitter or whatnot, that we are here to absolutely help so we've made it really easy for developers to get a hold of us whenever they have that, that need absolutely, morgan parker 23 21 yeah, yeah, i sit next to some of our support staff, and they're really great and, you know, they're, they're right on every ticket that we have yeah, i think, you know, i would echo that, that, you know, there's a real person behind, you know, every ticket and every issue and, you know, really working to solve these things as quick as possible tony morelan 23 37 definitely us too you know, we work as a team, i sit really close to some of our support people, and a lot of times it's a team solution that we're putting together so absolutely that's great it's really great so when you're not working, what is it that you do for fun up and up in vancouver? morgan parker 23 52 yeah, as i mentioned, i mean, vancouver's got a wealth of things to do so in the winter, it's really snowboarding and spending every moment i can in the mountains and yeah, just getting as much snow as i can in my life in the winter when there's a lot and then lucky enough as well once the snow starts to kind of melt, i start riding motorbikes so dirt bikes and street bikes and do a little bit of racing here and there so really, yes really full season of activities around and tony morelan 24 19 outdoors person and outdoors morgan parker 24 21 person exactly you like tony morelan 24 22 the wind blowing through morgan parker 24 24 yeah, exactly i mean, it feels good gone gone quick, sometimes tony morelan 24 28 sure excellent well, hey, morgan, absolutely appreciate you taking the time to sit down with me and talk about the next partner program so thanks very much appreciate it thank you outro 24 37 looking to start creating for samsung, download the latest tools to code your next app, or get software for designing apps without coding at all sell your apps to the world on the samsung galaxy store check out www developer samsung com today and start your journey with samsung the pow! podcast is brought to you by the samsung developer program and produced by tony morelan
