Samsung Smart TV Content Metadata Feed Guide

This guide describes the Universal Metadata Database (UMD) schema and data requirements that must be used to integrate your video content into the content discovery features of Samsung Smart TV.

It is intended for authorized partners who have an official Tizen application offering OTT video content on Samsung Smart TV.

Introduction

To make your video content appear in Samsung Smart TV content discovery features, such as Universal Guide and Search, you must provide your content metadata in the required feed format.

The metadata feed contains a list of Program structures. Each Program structure contains information about a single video content item, such as a TV show or a movie.

There are two feed types, depending on whether your content has an external ID:

  • External ID feed: If you have an external ID from a reference metadata provider, you only need to provide the external ID and your playback option information. Program metadata, such as titles, descriptions, and images, is matched through the external ID.
  • Full metadata feed: If you do not have an external ID, provide the full metadata for each content item, including titles, descriptions, images, and series information.

For details and examples of the Program data structure for each feed type, see Program Data Structure with External ID and Program Data Structure without External ID.

To decide which feed type to use, see Choosing a Feed Type.

The metadata feed must meet the following formatting and delivery requirements:

  • File format: The feed must be in either JSON or XML format. GZIP compression is recommended for faster transfer, but uncompressed JSON and XML files are also supported.

  • File encoding: The feed must be encoded in UTF-8.

  • Delivery: The feed must be delivered through HTTP/HTTPS or Amazon S3. Make the feed publicly accessible, or provide the credentials required to access it.

  • File name: To ensure that the latest version of the feed is retrieved, use the following naming convention:

    • S3 feed:
      • {your_app_id}_YYYYMMDD_HHMMSS.xml.gz
      • {your_app_id}_YYYYMMDD_HHMMSS.json.gz
    • HTTP/HTTPS feed (a static URL ending with):
      • {your_app_id}.xml.gz
      • {your_app_id}.json.gz

If the file is not GZIP-compressed, omit .gz from the file name.

  • Update frequency: Only pull-based delivery is supported. You cannot push the feed to Samsung or notify Samsung of updates. Regardless of when you update your feed, Samsung downloads the full feed once a day and the delta feed every 2 hours. The exact download times are set for each partner when feed integration begins.

  • Feed content:

    • For full updates, each feed file must contain the complete feed content, even if you provide multiple feeds per day.
    • For delta updates, see Delta Update.

Choosing a Feed Type

External IDs are currently supported only for Gracenote TMS IDs. Choose the feed type for each service country.

Country

Use the external ID feed if all of the content in the feed has Gracenote TMS IDs.
Otherwise, use the full metadata feed.
